Have you done any accuracy testing with the rifle?

My friend had the Gen 1 and it had some flaws although what stood out to me is that he had an issue and the same day they received the rifle back they fixed it and sent it to him, no issues since.

I had an MCR and it was very accurate at 1.6" 100m off a bench with 55 grain factory ammo. Over insertion of mags and not being able to reliably use Pmag's was the reason I sold it.

I was happy with my Gen 1. There were 2 ammo types that really shot well (moa or sub moa). The other types of ammo tried yeilded 2 to 3 moa.

Templar first impressions

I took the Templar to the range for the first time. Again I am very pleased with the rifle, it is performing as expected.

Here is some pictures and feedback:

Then Off to the range:

I was surprised by the accuracy of the pencil barrel. I was shooting at 100M. I was easily printing 1.25 - 1.75 MOA groups with ''Run of the mill'' 55gr ammo. To me this is perfect since most sporting carbines / rifles are required to print 2 - 3 MOA. I had 0 malfunction through a multitude of mags and about 200 rds fired.

Reloads are super slick, love the basic ''AR style'' bolt release. All brands of mags fall with ease. (10 rds pistol mags with extension bloc pictured here)

All in all I am very satisfied with the rifle.

I think the improvements make this the best bang for your buck 180 version right now. A 1000+ round review whenever anyone reaches that would be helpful too.

I do not have the Gen 2 Templar, but I have the same 5.56mm upper as the Gen 1 Templar on my Crusader 9 Dual Caliber Combo and have passed through 1300 rounds of 5.56mm in that upper (2100 rounds through the 9mm upper on the same lower) as of two weeks ago.

In 1300 rounds I have had two FTFs which were easily cleared by cycling the charging handle; one of those two may have been user loading error. Rifle is running clean and accurate. I did take the time to loctite a number of small screws on the upper quite a while back, and I did experience some issues with the bolt hold open lever coming loose which were fixed once I knew where to check when maintaining the rifle. ( https://www.reddit.com/r/canadaguns.../?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 )

I know that doesn't answer questions about the Gen 2 Templar upper, but even earlier gen rifles can run just fine for 1k+ rounds.

@Memnoch - I'm using the same RT-6 Burris riflescope. Hope you enjoy it as well.

I also recommend watching screws and locktighting as needed. My stock screw became loose at some point, took me a minute to fix when i got back.

Love the Burris. Only downside is that the illuminated reticle isn't bright enough during daytime use. (But it is usually always the case with sub-1000$ LPVO)

Agree with you about the reticle not being bright enough for bright daytime use. I knew that going in. I bought mine as a combo pack that came with the Burris Fast Fire 3 MRD, and set it up on an offset mount - it's great for quick snapshots at shorter ranges.

Those groups are great, no need for a heavy barrel at all. I’m glad they listened and lightened up this firearm to make it better.

She is a still a heavy girl, even with the lightening changes, but I am glad the pencil barrel didn't affect the accuracy much (and we have more accuracy data from a person who isn't part of the CA marketing team!).

I'm really REALLY hoping to be able to find a Crown land shooting location this spring season so I can stretch my Gen 1 Templar upper out to 100 yds again. Shooting at 25m at my local indoor range just doesn't cut it.

It’s listed at 7.2lbs, a 16.5” CZ Bren 2 is listed at 7.3lbs. I’d say for 18.7” barrel length they’re doing pretty good, regardless of barrel type.

Been on the fence about one of these for some time - with the Gen 2 changes they're even more appealing.

Reason for my stalling is what seem to be QC and reliability issues.

What seems to be the consensus on these rifles - have they overcome some of the hiccups and now worth purchasing with confidence?

Has anyone had their Templar/Sentinel barrel removed for a cerakote job? Any issues getting it removed?

I think I've read about one person who removed their barrel. You have to remove something in the order of eight hex screws around the trunnion plate. [EDIT: This is incorrect - see posts below this one - you have to remove four screws and a cover plate] The way they described it it wasn't an easy process, but it wasn't impossible either.

I've been watching most threads here and at Reddit that mention the Templar and I own a Crusader 9 Dual Caliber combo which shipped (for me) with an upper that is identical to the Gen 1 Templar. I think my impression is that generally you will not have a major problem, but there are enough small glitches (individual parts breaking, things out of spec) for most users that I wouldn't call it a "buy with confidence" level.

Their sales and general info email don't have a good track record on responses, but their warranty service is pretty decent. I'd say that you will almost certainly run into a small issue sometime in the first year of ownership, one that will probably be fixable with a small amount of intervention by the owner, or a smallish/quick warranty return process. I say that as a satisfied Crusader Arms firearm owner who also knows CA isn't a big player and doesn't have the QA and QC that maybe it should.

What I would say is that if you want a flawless rifle, you're not likely going to get one with the Crusader Templar, even the Gen 2. If you're willing to put up with a little maintenance, a little bit of loctite and maybe a small warranty return, the rifle will do right by you.

If that's outside your preferences, don't get a Templar - get a Bren or a X95. If you're willing to put a little more effort into owning a firearm that is different and Canadian made, it will work out.

Memnoch - can you provide a closer range image of the bent charging handle? I saw the early prototype gen 2 at TACCOM 2023 and the charging handle looked SUPER proto-type-ey. Maybe a couple of angles if possible, if you don't mind. I'm really curious if it changed at all between the early prototype and what they're actually selling as the Gen 2 Templar.

I'd also like to see if it would fit on my Gen 1 Templar upper.

I found the post where someone detailed what was involved in removing the barrel: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...pectre-LTD?p=19767156&viewfull=1#post19767156

The user was obviously very frustrated with the process. You have to remove a bottom cover plate (item #14 in the manual, available here https://www.crusaderarms.ca/manual-download - page 19) to get at the barrel nut. It's possible that you also have to unscrew eight screws to get at the the trunnion plate as well , but I'm not sure.

Morc, to me, this doesn't seems like a big deal. The barrel is affixed in the "AR-15 Style" with a big barrel nut. (free floating barrel)

Being a monolithic upper, there is a barrel access port covered by a plate. Just remove the 4 screws to open the port and remove the barrel with a AR pattern barrel wrench the same way you would do for an AR. (Don't remove the whole trunnion...)
