Cost per round ?

Jez; I thought Pasture Pool was cheap. Guess it depends where you live.

We charge $7 per round, if you go to Canadian Tire and pay $25+gst for 90 Champion targets, it works out to $7.32 for 25 targets. So if you shoot 100 targets per day, it
costs you about $1.25 more day to buy and shoot your
own targets. But you need to purchase your own thrower
and battery to run it, to shoot on your own. So if you pay
$500 for a cheap thrower and battery, that is three years
membership at our club. And a membership at our club
provides a rifle/handgun range, action bays, and an archery range. And if you have restricted firearms, you need a membership to shoot them anyways. So when you do the math, it may actually be cheaper to shoot at our club, and if you don't have a range membership, it will still take at least a few years to save enough to pay for your own thrower/ battery. And going to a range you aren't leaving a mess of broken clays behind after shooting.

With the 13-15% increase in target cost this year, you are very close to a cost of $6 for 25 targets assuming no waste leaving $1 per round for margin. Rather a slim margin. Where do you buy your targets.

What drives shooters in our area to shoot on crown land is that they can consume alcohol while shooting which they obviously can't at our club. I think they also believe they are saving money by buying their own machine and targets which is rather shaky economics as you have pointed out.

Actual cost delivered was around $5.60 per 25 from Tom Ferguson, so we have a margin of around $1.40. And yes, one excuse that I ofter hear for not shooting at a club, is that you can't consume alcohol. So instead some people shoot and drink on crown land and risk a charge for handling firearms while impaired, and they leave a mess, that turns many people agains target shooting on crown land.

Stubble explained it nicely actually. Most memebers never think that your round rate has to cover more than the cost of the targets. It's not about the club racking up profits, the rate has to cover all of the clubs expenses and a buffer for repairs/emergencies if your club is to remain viable. We had our AGM yesterday, and we are remaining for the time being at $7.50 round(Skeet, Trap, 5-Stand or Supersporting), but as our Financial administrator pointed out, the spring order of targets will be $10,000 for 6 pallets delivered. So like any good accountant, he is keeping an eye on the prices.

We bought 10 pallets, so for a club our size, we are good for about two years, which means that we will stay at $7 for the next two years. When we have to restock, we will have to review again. This is my 9th year with the club, and until last year, we had never changed from $5. Talking to our treasurer, it was $5 for 15-20 years.

We will likely be going to $8.00 or so for a round of trap or skeet this Spring.
at $5.00 a round , we are not covering the cost of maintenance , birds etc, especially when our transportation costs are so high to get targets up to Ft. McMurray.
We are looking at replacing one of our older machines as well, which of course which is a major expense.

Which club do you shoot at?

Thunder Bay Trap and Skeet, $5 a round, $10 for a round of sporting clays. That will likely change this year. In the past couple of years they increased membership fees to offset target costs. Some debate as to what we should do. Some people say just increase it a couple bucks (but then you're dealing with change), some say punch cards, some say the first round of the night should be $10 and subsequent ones $5. A 4 round night would average out to $6.25 then, probably not enough to cover the costs.

As far as we are concerned , the only fair thing is to increase what we charge for a round of targets. That way everyone pays the same for their targets. Increasing membership fees, or charging more only for the first round, favors the people that shoot more often, at the expense of those that shoot less often.

Not saying it's fair, but that's what they did. I think increasing the target fees and using a punch card is probably the best way to go. Increasing membership costs or target costs for the first round only probably has the opposite effect and will drive people away.

A balance between membership and the price for targets needs to maintained. The club I belong to sets the membership at a price that covers fixed costs such as lease, taxes, utilities and infrastructure maintenance. The target price is based on the target cost. If some shooters feel the membership is too expensive, they have the option of paying non member prices for targets. Whatever process a club follows to set prices, there will be people that are unhappy.

And that is pretty much what we do, the membership fees are based on insurance, electricity, lawn care, snow removal, electronic gate/cameras/computers, clubhouse expenses, the target price covers the cost of targets and maintenance of the machines.

Some of the rates you guys are talking about I wouldn’t expect much more then a well weathered picnic table a leaning ####ter with a moon on the door and a poorly constructed trap house and skeet field.

We have a really nice club with three wobble trap layouts and a skeet layout, bunk houses for out of town shooters, fully equipped club house with showers and professional kitchen to hold 150 people for a supper.
Pretty great actually for what we pay per year and per round of trap or skeet.

Sounds wonderful.

No need to ponder the membership rates have a look at the sponsor board.

My home club has been doing casinos for at least the last 25 years that I know of, that’s how we got a new clubhouse and many other extras. We used to get scheduled for one every other year, unfortunately its changed now to every 3 years but it’s still very much worth it. We’d have never put enough clay in the air to pay for it all otherwise. If your non profit club isn’t doing this then they're missing out on a lot of financial help.

FMFGA used to do casinos, but we also applied for and received two six figure grants for range improvements. We did apply for a third, and were approved for $110k for a 10 station sporting clays field, but when I retired and left, nobody was willing to take over the project, so it never happened. The current membership fee is $250, not overly expensive for the use of such a facility. As well as everything already mentioned by ironcat, it also offers an indoor range in the basement of the club house, a 1000m range, 9 handgun bays, and the clubhouse is air conditioned.
