Jez; I thought Pasture Pool was cheap. Guess it depends where you live.
We charge $7 per round, if you go to Canadian Tire and pay $25+gst for 90 Champion targets, it works out to $7.32 for 25 targets. So if you shoot 100 targets per day, it
costs you about $1.25 more day to buy and shoot your
own targets. But you need to purchase your own thrower
and battery to run it, to shoot on your own. So if you pay
$500 for a cheap thrower and battery, that is three years
membership at our club. And a membership at our club
provides a rifle/handgun range, action bays, and an archery range. And if you have restricted firearms, you need a membership to shoot them anyways. So when you do the math, it may actually be cheaper to shoot at our club, and if you don't have a range membership, it will still take at least a few years to save enough to pay for your own thrower/ battery. And going to a range you aren't leaving a mess of broken clays behind after shooting.
