Mossberg 590 shockwave sbs

I tried the new taller front bead sight out today for the first time. I was shooting 1oz. slugs at 100m. With the original bead, the gun was shooting about 25” high (with acquisition of the bead on the flat top of the receiver).

With the new DT taller sight, the shotgun now shoots about 6” high (again with sight acquisition on the flat top of the receiver). Big improvement!

My solution to get it closer is to acquire the bead and then lower the fore end until the bead just about disappears. Or, to just acquire the very beginning (top) of the bead and then break the trigger. Any way you do it, timing your break just as the sight breaks the top of the receiver is paramount.

I’m not trying to shoot groups here. Just trying to hit the center of the large silhouette or the 18” square steel at 100m with a slug. As I mentioned before, the taller sight helps. I guess if I wanted to have it be perfect, an elevated XS or equivalent front sight would be my choice. But because I like the look of the 590 Retrograde as original, I won’t be going that route. When I shoot slugs, I’ll remember my holds at distance.

YMMV Have fun!

I'm happy to learn this and hoping I can get mine out this weekend. Frontier has a nice 14 inch 590A1 with speed feed stock for $1000.00, and I'm teetering in the fence as it has Ghost ring and blade sights...but I need another 12 ga, like I need another hole in my head.

Did you shoot it at 50 & 25m? Curious to see how the poa/poi is at more practical distances than just at 100m.

Sure you do, life’s to short not to buy another 12g. Especially a 14” barrel, that’s the sweet spot barrel length.

I was shooting at 100m. Never tried it closer. I should probably try it at 50m. At 25m, that's for shot not slugs, IMHO.

I don’t know where you are but in the area I live in it’s not uncommon to see bears out in the bush, sometimes up close. When I pattern bird and buckshot I also shoot a few slugs at 15 and 25m, if a bear is inside 25m I look at it as a potential problem animal. It’s always good to know what poa/poi my 12g will shoot up close as well as at 50-75m, anything further than that is not a worry or in rifle range.

I can’t argue with that philosophy. My use for the Retrograde is close up killing, if needed, for coyotes with 00 buck. The slug work is mainly for fun. That’s why I shoot out to 100m mostly. At 200m is a riot too!

My general shotgun use is for small game so generally 40m or less, but I always have some slugs in a Velcro side saddle in case I see a deer or bear close up during sept-nov when they are open. It is fun shooting slugs further out, I love the bang-smack delay at 100m.

I’d like to do some 12g slug reloading for plinking fun time, have lots of soft lead stacked away and it would be fun experimenting with slugs.

I was just able to take my 14” barrel 590 out and id say its right around 4” high now at 25m. Very easy to correct like this and was making groups about the size of my hand.

All in all very happy with the defender tactical hi ball bead!(upgraded mini shell adapter along with the follower also feels nice)
The safety sight im so so about and might switch that back out as its only really a reference to make sure you’re straight on the bead.
When focusing on bead and target its very blurry for me.

If you’re not straight on the bead you should re adjust your form anyways…

Defender tactical hi ball bead and safety switch update.

I took my 14" frankenberg out a few weeks ago, the one that had a poi about 3 feet low; happy to report that with the hi ball and safety lever installed it's now only a few inches low at 50M. I can compensate for that no problem.

The bead sight and safety weren't that expensive and came across the border no problem.
