Who makes the best Alaskan rifle today?

I watched the Shoemaker video a lot of great info. I did note that he does not say anything about shooting a bear with a handgun face on in a charge. It takes a lot of balls to just stand there with out shooting at some of the distances he talks about. In my experience Polar bears don't bluff like browns or grizzlies if he's coming he coming. Really interesting guy to listen to.

This is the internet, experience is to be discounted and ridiculed lest it threaten one’s beliefs.

I discussed rifles with Shoemaker and he’s a big fan of a few simple things, high among them .30-06s and above all shot placement.

Nothing wrong with those priorities...

Nothing wrong with a pistol, of any sort, as a last line of defense either.

Really? Shoemaker?

I don't know a thing about Shoemaker, I only viewed a photograph and single shot rifle of him, never even made a query. Big story, I'm not interested in gunwriters, hunting adventure stories, hunting shows, etc. I only enjoy my own experiences in the hunting and gun world. Authors as: Shelbly Foote, Michael Sharra, etc interest me.

Hmmmm, false idols, no thank-you, Chuck.

Respecting a man's experience is worshipping an idol?

Anyone with four decades plus of doing one thing, and doing it well, will have plenty of good information to share and is certainly worth hearing out... particularly compared to internet warriors.

In Alaska a OU Double rifle with one barrel bang on at 100 yards and the other at 250 yards is an advantage.

Fair play, everyone is entitled to their onion, for what that's worth. He's not a gun writer though , he's guided bears for 4 decades and had to shot a few in self defense.

I just watched that interview. I can't say that I disagree with anything that Phil said... experienced and reasonable.

Precisely, I bumped into grizzlies 6 times while hunting in the Rocky Mountains without incident; I believe that they were a little gun-shy.;) Many false idols in the world and I don't need any of them. Many quote gun writers or hunters from their books and I could not be bothered reading them.

A little contradictory there... but reading between the lines, your point is apparent.

I never quoted these authors, nor do I glamorize them, they are authors of history. Personally, I have more interest in the bigger picture of life, than in special interest groups, when reading literature.

I’ve never heard anyone say get smarter, don’t read. Reading is kind of a big thing.

But reading has zip to do with listening to someone talk about their 40 plus years of experience with something.

Ok so I gotta play along with this a bit.

Michaerl Sharra, born 1916 (death irrelevant). His claim to fame was writing about the American Civil War.

But clearly he wasn't even alive during that conflict, so how do we know his writings are accurate? He's only re-writing/interpreting previous reports on any of the Civil War history. All anecdotal, even if his writings are well done.

But then we take Phil Shoemaker, who without question has been there done that, still doing that, 45+ years.

How can anybody dispute or poo poo that knowledge?
