Hi there!
Bless my lovely bride - Last fall I was bemoaning increased difficulty seeing things in that last 20 minutes of legal hunting light. Shortly thereafter she took it upon herself to surprise me when it was her turn to choose what we do for date night, organizing dual eye exams at the optometrist and then buying me a set of glasses.
Initially was mortified, until I tried them on and realized how much of an improvement they made especially in that last 20 minutes of light...WOW. I've been wanting more and more to hunt with irons, but feeling like those days were behind me as I could not see well enough anymore. Well, problem solved for at least another couple years, and if you can’t tell boy oh boy I’m excited. God I love that woman.
I set up a left-handed .308win Tikka Arctic kinda-analogue (not really, it has a carbon fibre wrapped barrel and uses standard tikka magazines), and then a .22lr CZ trainer with a carbon-fibre wrapped proof barrel including a custom made bloop tube to increase sight radius plus have the ability to mount a conventional globe sight. I set up my front sight with an Anschutz tapered target post, and my rear sight is an Anschutz 8000, with an adjustable diopter.
Next - how was I going to practice?
So there I was, pondering this at the kitchen table trying to come up with a hybrid of the oh-so-awesome classic figure 11/12 and the equally awesome Swiss B4/B5, when my lovely bride peers over my shoulder and proclaims "He's so cute! But why does the lego guy have an ak?". It was that moment as she strolled off singing "everything is awesommmmme...when you're shooting at meeeeee!" I knew what my 2024 for-fun rimfire challenge would be:
I got out today to try it out, using both the color target as I'd modelled off the swiss target, and a black-and-white xeroxed version to try them both out. It was blustering drizzle when I shot the black and white target, but then the cloud blew by and there were moments of stillness as I finished off my box of CCI standard velocity on the color one.
Had enough fun I think I'll be shooting it a bunch over the summer to see how I improve, and figured I'd post the challenge here in the hopes that others might try and share their results too. When you print the target, make sure to click "actual size" or no-scaling, and when you do the lego guy should measure just shy of 113mm, or 4.44 inches across.
Hope you're all keeping well, and would be excited to trade stories with anyone else looking to improve their off-hand shooting this summer!
Best,
Brobee

- Any rimfire rifle, two classes, irons and optics
- 50 yards
- Brobee's EIA BB412 target (link here)
- Standing unsupported
- 25 rounds
- Maximum time 10 min
- Highest-score-possible = 100
