Hi there!

Bless my lovely bride - Last fall I was bemoaning increased difficulty seeing things in that last 20 minutes of legal hunting light. Shortly thereafter she took it upon herself to surprise me when it was her turn to choose what we do for date night, organizing dual eye exams at the optometrist and then buying me a set of glasses.

Initially was mortified, until I tried them on and realized how much of an improvement they made especially in that last 20 minutes of light...WOW. I've been wanting more and more to hunt with irons, but feeling like those days were behind me as I could not see well enough anymore. Well, problem solved for at least another couple years, and if you can’t tell boy oh boy I’m excited. God I love that woman.

I set up a left-handed .308win Tikka Arctic kinda-analogue (not really, it has a carbon fibre wrapped barrel and uses standard tikka magazines), and then a .22lr CZ trainer with a carbon-fibre wrapped proof barrel including a custom made bloop tube to increase sight radius plus have the ability to mount a conventional globe sight. I set up my front sight with an Anschutz tapered target post, and my rear sight is an Anschutz 8000, with an adjustable diopter.

Next - how was I going to practice?

So there I was, pondering this at the kitchen table trying to come up with a hybrid of the oh-so-awesome classic figure 11/12 and the equally awesome Swiss B4/B5, when my lovely bride peers over my shoulder and proclaims "He's so cute! But why does the lego guy have an ak?". It was that moment as she strolled off singing "everything is awesommmmme...when you're shooting at meeeeee!" I knew what my 2024 for-fun rimfire challenge would be:

  • Any rimfire rifle, two classes, irons and optics
  • 50 yards
  • Brobee's EIA BB412 target (link here)
  • Standing unsupported
  • 25 rounds
  • Maximum time 10 min
  • Highest-score-possible = 100

I got out today to try it out, using both the color target as I'd modelled off the swiss target, and a black-and-white xeroxed version to try them both out. It was blustering drizzle when I shot the black and white target, but then the cloud blew by and there were moments of stillness as I finished off my box of CCI standard velocity on the color one.

Had enough fun I think I'll be shooting it a bunch over the summer to see how I improve, and figured I'd post the challenge here in the hopes that others might try and share their results too. When you print the target, make sure to click "actual size" or no-scaling, and when you do the lego guy should measure just shy of 113mm, or 4.44 inches across.

Hope you're all keeping well, and would be excited to trade stories with anyone else looking to improve their off-hand shooting this summer!

Best,

Brobee

Kindah suprised about the lack of traffic on this post, Maybe you just scared everybody with UR fine shooting skills. I hope your familys doing well. Your great people and an awesome bunch in the shooting community. Really have enjoyed dealing with you and your reactive targets, watching all your informative videos. Hopefully the passing of your canine bestie is getting easier. Remember what a great life you provided compared to what couldve happend. Im old and been fortunate to have had more than one great dog! I remember and reflect on all of them and their unique personalities. I have an extremely hard time saying good bye and letting them go but remember the joy theyve enriched my life and I get another unique treasure to train and spend some of my life with. Gift another dog the pleasure of your family.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot when I fix my off hand rifle. Had it out today as it was shooting low last match and ran into mechanical failure.

Ha! Not sure my shooting skills are that fine, lots of practice and improvements to be had for sure…;) Everyone else seems more interested in exploring their rifle/ammo combo’s variable-eliminated inherent accuracy; in the Brobee EIA challenge you could post a perfect score if you can deliver 4MOA standing - heck, 9moa would get you a score between 75 and 80! It has been very humbling for me to realize how hard that actually is and in today’s world of “only-half-minute-rifles are interesting” I guess it should not surprise me that folks aren’t interested in anything that potentially reveals most can’t hold 4 minutes.

Been fun for me though this past month, enough to keep going and very much enjoying my new iron sighted rifle eyes!

Not sure about a new pup yet, maybe someday after the girls are done university and I’m able to dial back work, but not for a while as it’s still a bit too raw.

Thanks for your kind comments,

J

Had a chance to try it out today. Used the KKV 1001 trainer with iron sights and my enfield 4T Clone in 22lr.
Looking forward to shooting again with more rifles.

I definitely should have slowed down a bit. Even single loading the enfield I had about 1 minutes and 30 seconds left. The other trainer has a 5 round mag and I still had 5 minutes left over. Will incorporate the sling for the kkv and use more time

Used the 4t sniper clone again and my bergara bx22. The bx has a 6 to 24 scope and the 4t Clone a 2 to 7. Definitely see the shaking more with the bergara

I only have one magazine for my trainer and reloaded on the clock. I also single load the enfield 4t as it doesn't have a repeater magazine only the empty mag to hold the brass after shot. I still had time left after single loading 25 rounds at a time. Ymmv

Cool just asking. As it doesn't specify and sure others would had the same question. Our off hand shoots don't have a time limit, so hard to judge how long I actual take.

Guess I'll give it a try tomorrow

That made me laugh alot! My mind is weak enough that I feel more confident (and consequently shoot better) with irons (or low power variable set on low power) because my sight picture "looks" more stable.
I know what you mean. I tried it on 12x but backed it down to 4x. Do you use a post or circle insert in your 457 front peep? I have an apeture Anschutz 64. But need to pick up a cuff arm sling.
