When I researched the excise/duty tax, I must of misunderstood. I calulated that it would be about $320, however, when FedEx arrived at my front door with the item, the tax was only $109 dollars. There must be an aggreement between Canada and Japan on taxes.Care to share what you found with the rest of us? Someone might find this thread via the search in the future.
I once paid over 1000 dollars in duties and HST for a bike i bought from the States shipped through Fedex. Now i start to think if any of those amounts were just BS. They didnt tell me about the fees. They just delivered the bike and a mail came a month later with all the feesThere's a website called Tariff Finder that you can use to calculate import duties that CBSA would collect.
Keep in mind that courier services will almost always include some (potentially) BS fees. To best avoid those fees, you can self clear the package through Canadian customs.
I've had a courier company try to collect over $100 in import duties and GST. When I self cleared the package, I found out that the item was not actually subject to an import duty. In the end, I owed only GST which was about $30.
