When I researched the excise/duty tax, I must of misunderstood. I calulated that it would be about $320, however, when FedEx arrived at my front door with the item, the tax was only $109 dollars. There must be an aggreement between Canada and Japan on taxes.
I have ordered less expensive items from the USA, in return, I paid more tax. I assume that it all depends on the item, price, country of origin, accommpanied with trade agreements.
Regardless, I purchased a Kowa Prominar 20-60x77mm spotting scope, which was one hell of a deal (in comparision to Swarovski prices, however the optics are quality twins).

There's a website called Tariff Finder that you can use to calculate import duties that CBSA would collect.

Keep in mind that courier services will almost always include some (potentially) BS fees. To best avoid those fees, you can self clear the package through Canadian customs.

I've had a courier company try to collect over $100 in import duties and GST. When I self cleared the package, I found out that the item was not actually subject to an import duty. In the end, I owed only GST which was about $30.

I once paid over 1000 dollars in duties and HST for a bike i bought from the States shipped through Fedex. Now i start to think if any of those amounts were just BS. They didnt tell me about the fees. They just delivered the bike and a mail came a month later with all the fees

That web site indicates there would be a 13% import duty on a bicycle. GST would be another 13%.

Then the carrier usually adds a "brokerage" fee, I don't recall what the major carriers would for that.

Cheers,
Neil

One time, I self cleared a package handled by Fed Ex. Those numbskulls then sent me a letter, after I paid GST to CBSA (no duty owed), demanding I pay duty and their bogus brokerage fees. I called them up and really went off on them (mostly politely, but man, I was frustrated!) about how they try to rip people off. It was also a bit of a pain in the neck to get them to send me the required documents. I had to make at least 4 calls before I connected with someone willing/able to help.

I have found DHL though, to be easier to work with. Same BS with trying to collect duty not actually owed and the brokerage fee, but they were quick in getting me the needed docs, and never tried to collect on me after I paid CBSA GST (no duty owed).

Cheers,
Neil
