King of 4000fps

I've been meaning to load some 45 gr TSX in the 22-250 for Deer.

How fast can the 270 WSM push the 85 grainers; e-tip and tsx? What about the 27 Nosler?

I’ve had the 85gr e-tip up to 3900fps in a 22 inch barrelled 270WSM. It could use a few more inches of barrel. One shot without ear plugs it’s and I have a headache. Very accurate though.

My all time favorite coyote rifle is a 22-250ai pushing a 50gr ballistic tip right at 4000 fps. Now sold to a buddy but I used to have a 257wby with a custom 30” barrel that would do 4200fps with an 80gr barnes. Flatten just about anything with that combo.

I used to use a 110gr VMAX out of a 30-06 on Yotes. Nothing I've seen, could ever reproduce that level of destruction. The impact would liquify the internals, turning the insides into blood soup and producing a 4" exit hole. Not good for pelts but it resulted in insta-death for Yotes.

I was reading articles by a guy who was going to do something similar with a 23 caliber, the target was going to be a leopard seal and some penguins though.

He stopped publishing, maybe the seal got him
Maybe it was handloading and getting 300fps more than anyone else...

When the 55gr Combined technology came out by Winchester/ Nosler. I loaded them in my model 700V in 6mm and it easily surpassed the 4000fps mark and was extremely accurate. I shot very few and sold the rifle so as too throat erosion, I can’t say!

The problem with loading up 22-250 and 243 -6mm s etc to over 4000 fps with light bullets is there extremely hard on the barrels throat and SOON ! Burn it out - barrel life is short with them while the smaller powder capacity cartridges such as the FAST. 204 Ruger are gentle on your barrel - good accuracy could be as much as 4 times longer . Just sometime to consider when you want FAST . JMO RJ
That's the issue with my 2506 and 75gr bullets. The throat looks like a #4 alligator charred bourbon barrel

I had a Cooper in 17FB that shot very well at over 4000fps, and my Cooper in 20 Tactical is my most accurate sporting rifle.
How would you compare the 20tac to a 204ruger? My plan when I bought my 223 was to rebarrel to 20tac but the first 3 shots I took cloverleafed at 100 yards so I ended up keeping the factory barrel

Where did you find a 30" .257 barrel?

Ultimate reloader YouTube channel pushed a 308win to almost 300wm. IIRC nearly 70% over Sammi specs

Not saying it's safe or repeatable and I'd never try it but....there's always that 1 guy lol

I do miss Doug though. He did have alot of experience and knowledge. Even if some was borderlining on the extreme

Yeah, he was an interesting fellow. I'd pay to know what pressure his handloads were running at, if he was in fact swimming far from shore or if (most) everyone else is so far back they can't even see the water.

The 20 Tac has a longer neck, and I could get Dakota/Lapua brass, but performance wise, they are pretty much the same. My Cooper in 20Tac is my most accurate factory rifle, with the average group size being around 1/4" for three shots, with R-10x, and the 39grBlitzking.

I had even considered the 20 practical which is the 223 necked down to 20 cal. Brass would be cheap and easy.
The idea of a 20 practical a 223 rem and a 25/45 sharps would make a very stable varmint threesome.

I'm leaning towards a 20cal
