That one was a benchmark but plenty of the makers can do blanks that long.Where did you find a 30" .257 barrel?

Glad to see this post. Im toying with the idea of a new build. My thoughts are a 32" JC barrel, 1:7 twist, 257 weatherby mag, running 75gr hammer hunter bullets. My all time favorite coyote rifle is a 22-250ai pushing a 50gr ballistic tip right at 4000 fps. Now sold to a buddy but I used to have a 257wby with a custom 30” barrel that would do 4200fps with an 80gr barnes. Flatten just about anything with that combo.
In my personal experience, when it comes to the effect on coyotes and such, you can absolutely tell. Typical the faster you get the longer your point blank range is. You might loose out to other options when the ranges get further, but not having to worry about holdovers out to 300 or so makes things pretty simple when calling predators.Other than in your head....why does it matter if the bullet flies at 4000fps or 3100fps. Sitting behind the gun you have no idea. It's just a number. So it takes .3 of a second longer to get there. You can tell?
Setting up a 243 shortly, with the Hornady 58s.Fastest i ever shot was a 220 swift at 4600fps. my Hornady 243 58 gr varmint rounds are 3925 fps too
The hydraulic shock in a pregnant female ground hog would be... satisfying.A few years back when I had my 257 WM I loaded some 75gr Vmax over a full charge of H414 right on 3900 FPS, used them on coyotes, given the fur was worthless so no loss OMG did they open up a dog, gave the magpies small shreds that didn't need ripping, would have loved to try them on wood chucks but we don't have any out in my neck of the woods.
you are right , very little "practical benefit" but man...it sure is satisfying to watch my buddy kill a cow moose at 200 yrds with that 32-378...When it was hit, that moose did almost a 360 in mid air and never even wiggled after.Other than in your head....why does it matter if the bullet flies at 4000fps or 3100fps. Hah! That reminds me of when my uncle came moose hunting with us. He brought a 375H&H with him. He hit a bull at about 100 yds and the moose let out a huge bellow and fell on the spot. It was like he was knocked over with a battering ram.you are right , very little "practical benefit" but man...it sure is satisfying to watch my buddy kill a cow moose at 200 yrds with that 32-378...When it was hit, that moose did almost a 360 in mid air and never even wiggled after.
