Update. The .30-06 is good enough as a short range deer rifle.

I was told recently by a guy who is going bison hunting that the outfitter (or canned hunt operator in this case) asked him what rifle he was going to bring

he said "30-06"

guy laughed and said "you need a 300 short magnum to kill a bison"

amazing how 200 fps makes a cartridge go from marginal to excellent :D[/QUOTE
what is a bison- ?
all the big animals are called BUFFALO and are shot with a 50 SHARPS BUFFALO RIFLE- NOW THT MAKES SENSE- IT'S EVEN GOT THE WORD BUFFALO ON THE GUN

pfffft. 7mm Remington Magnum. drops anything and everything.

oh and one of the things I've learned about war from video games: If you find yourself mortally wounded by an enemy sniper be sure to let him know that he is a ######

More game killed in NA with the 06 than any other likely----Cowboy

And more game wounded and lost with the 30-06 for the same reason, there are more 30-06s being used. The biggest reason for that being that they were the military issue cartridge for the U.S.A. ,and the result was a great supply of low priced surplus rifles.

I am afraid the cheap, military surplus 30-06 rifles are long gone. No, the 30-06 is so popular because it is such a practical NA big game rifle, considered by many to be the best, all around cartridge for Canadian big game.
Now don't jump to your key board to tell me you have some type of magnum which is much superior. Of course, a large magnum will do more damage to a game animal than will the smaller 30-06.
That is not the point. The point is a 30-06 is completely adequate for North American big game. I would even say including grizzly bears, but I will not argue with anyone who differs. Ammunition is available everywhere and is much less costly than magnum types. More variations in bullet weights and types are available in the 30-06, than for any other calibre. The 30-06 has a fairly substantial recoil, but is still much easier for the average hunter to shoot more accurately than he/she will shoot with a heavy recoiling magnum.
I think elk are harder to kill than moose. However, I have made two, one shot kills on elk with a 270 and I had an older brother who shot between forty and fifty elk with a 30-06. I don't think he ever lost a wounded one. As a kid growing up in the boondocks, I once saw a neighbor walk through our yard going elk hunting and his rifle was a 32-40. The next morning he went through our yard with his team and sleigh and came home in the afternoon with an elk in the sleigh.

More rifles of a certain caliber in the hands of a large percentage of bad shots will equal more wounded game.

So I doubt it is the cartridge, as I have heard this said about the 30/30, the 303, the .270 etc etc.

Yes they are,but they did give the 30-06 a huge foothold in the market. Many people select a cartridge because their father, brother,or a friend use that cartridge. It's no different than with trucks. If your grandfather owned a Ford, and your father drives one,the odds are you will too. With so many surplus 30-06 rifles out there,it became so widely accepted that the gun companies all started chambering it,so it became more popular yet.
Do you really think that the 30-06 would be so popular if the U.S. military had chosen the 308win instead of the 30-06?I doubt it.The 308 win would now be the most popular cartridge used for hunting. If the 280 rem had been chosen by the U.S. military,it would be more popular than the 270win or the 30-06.

More rifles of a certain chambering being used will result in more game being killed with that cartridge, and more game being wounded with that cartridge. In both cases,it is popularity, not the particular cartridge.

Man I'm tired of all you dumb ass arm chair hunters bad mouthing TP. He is out there, representing all Canadian hunters. Sure he comes across as a jacked up -greaseball who will sell any item he gets for free. And yes perhaps he stages shots, takes ill advised hail maries and lies on camera but how many of you all have your own show? Yeah, I thought so. STFU! Any small time hunting celebrity with his own show has more credibility than you, becuase HE IS ON TV. Therefore he is the authority. I am going down to the room and I am going smash my 06's! Well I might save one for my next S. Alberta mulie management hunt but only one!

Pigeon is a ho!
So it's down to name calling now - how brilliant is that?

I enjoy "Canada in the Rough" and applaud Pigeon for bringing a hunting show to mainstream TV. That is really doing something in our urbanized culture today. Sponsorship is part of that deal and doesn't deserve a slur like that in my opinion. We may not share his views or preferences on cartridge selection etc. etc. - but so what.

f**k you guys natter like retards........

It's that time of year, they're bored.

I surely can't figure out why you guys need to bash Thomas Pigeon. He's one of ours, so maybe he stated something that doesn't jive with your own opinions. So what? - Better than those high-fiving, yeehawing other programs that I've seen on Wild TV. Calling him a "ho" ???? Truly uncalled for.

Sure, an elk is often a bit harder to put down than is a moose, but too tough for the '06? I have eaten a lot of elk that were not too tough for the old '06 ( also the 270, 7x57, 6.5x55, 280 Rem, probably a couple of other "lesser" chamberings that I've forgotten) about 3 dozen elk in all, only 9 with chamberings more powerful than the '06. (none with a 338) The only time I like a flatter shooting chambering with a bit of extra oomph is when I know there is a possibility of having to take a shot over 400 yards. It just occurred to me that I am probably nuts to be adding to this thread!! :slap:  Regards, Eagleye.

Umm.... I think the .308 win was brought along to replace the 30.06 by the U.S military some 50 odd years later so yeah they were both chosen by the Military, it just so happens that they are still using .308/7.62x51 Nato ;)

I think I know what you mean, the '03 springfield actions were cheap and available so a lot of hunters were out there hunting with 30.06 and the same thing happened here with the .303 brit and the Enfields.

I just wish we could of chambered our wartime rifles in .280 Ross, imagine all those .280 Ross Enfields/Ross Rifles and 280 Ross ammo on the shelf at Crappy Tire. There is something to said for a 145 gr. Bullet travelling at 3000 fps......

blargon is right. It's all about hitting them in the boiler room with a well constructed bullet. a 220 swift with a barnes X in the lungs, heart, spine, will kill any elk, moose no problem. An older fishing friend of mine has killed more moose/elk than most people In my circle, and uses a .243 winchester. He is comfortable with this gun and is an excellant marksman. I have seen him take out beaver at 200m with head shots.

I'm glad you posted Savagefan's "Pigeon is a ho!", WhelenB because I read it as "Pigeon is hot" and wondered what kind of a board I've been part of :D
