What have you cast today?

Beauties...sure wish I could be sitting in a lawn chair watching those go down range again!!!

What i should be doing is, If I could get a break from some health issues, is get some made up for my own damn tube and join you's.

I will add the day I spent watching was one of the best spent days of my life, the accuracy you boys exhibit from those smoothbores is astounding.

I cast these up this afternoon as it’s finally cooled off to plug the pot in. Lee 356 125 R 6 cavity and NOE 256 135 RF all using the Lyman #2 alloy. These will eventually get a coat of PC and will be used in a Glock and Ruger PC 9 for local 3 gun match’s. Will head back out after supper.

I powder coated a few of the 9mm bullets I posted the other day. Seemed to have turned out pretty good. Tractor Red PC1197, the old stand by Tool Blue PC1196 and Phantom Glass Black PC1147. I have yet to try Phantom High Gloss Clear PC1149. All purchased from Emerald Coatings.

Recently bought a pewter mug for $1 from a local thrift shop and cast 40+ bullets out of a Lee C309-170-FN (2.5 cents each).
So far as I can tell, pewter is as hard as linotype and melts at a lower temperature. It casts beautifully … but the bullets are approximately 30% lighter (118 grains). So I loaded up 3 in 30/06 over 30 grains of IMR 4198 and took them to the range. Wasn’t sure of the POI so I shot them at 75 yds … one hole! Needless to say, I’m impressed.

Btw, I used Crisco for lube.

My understanding is that pewter is close to being pure tin. I added about 2% to clip on wheel weights which should make an alloy close to Lyman #2??. My standard alloy for casting both rifle and pistol bullets. Rifle bullets were usually quenched in cold water from the mould which is supposed to make them harder. Tin added to an alloy is supposed to make fill out better.
Over the years I have melted literally hundreds of beer mugs and other pewter items. One time i purchased (in a thrift shop) a couple small pewter kitten statues. The clerk remarked they were really cute and my wife would surely love them. No need to tell her their true destiny in life!
She does have a small collection of really nice candle holders and goblets. I don't cast and shoot near as much as I once did. They are safe to enjoy their space on a side board in our kitchen.

I haven't cast .22's since the turn of the century and had forgotten just how fiddly the little toads really are.
Production over the last two weeks. Lots went back into the pot. They like lots of heat.

Got into casting because 330 gr .41 caliber, ain't simple to buy. I just got a .312 150 gr mold for .303 Brit, 7.62x54 and x39, and I did up a few using gas checks. And now, I ordered from Budget Shooter Supply a 170gr flat nose specifically for a 30.30. But I can use them in all 30 cal rifles, powder coating will begin once I cast some of those.

Scored some more raw materials today.....stopped by a good friends' shop.....
