What's a good affordable must have pump shotgun? Alien defese/general purpose

Shoot. Now I'm back to undecided.

I don't think I'll ever hunt realistically though so I'm really leaning that 590 Shockwave in cerakote and a SGA magpul stock.
Mostly academic at this point as I see you went with a Winchester. The nice thing with the Mossberg is that the mag tube is threaded into the receiver and can be easily swapped out for the longer tube.

That’s an awesome deal on the Shockwave, I’m tempted myself.

Here it is got it yesterday!

First impressions I am really happy. It feels solid, pump action is solid, doesn't feel rattly. The finish color is nice to, nice to have something different than black or silver/gray (or wood).

I was aiming up the shotgun to test the bead sight and it's not that bad as I thought because the receiver has grooved lines along with the screws to mount optic, I can almost use one of those screws and grooves as a rear sight so to say and align it with my front bead consistently. Can't wait to try it out in practise and see how well it does.

For my ammo I got 175rnds of Challenger low recoil target slugs for range fun, 25rnds of Challenger coyote buckshot #4 for alien/small animal defense and 10rnds Federal premium truball deep penetrator slugs for bear defense.

Right on, glad you’re happy. Go shoot it a bunch and make that shoulder tender :) Can we expect a range report soon?

Whatever you do, do not overspend on something. It is then easier to fall into the temptation to liquidate the arm to pay bills. A modestly priced reliable arm you have around is better than something you sold due to it being out of your comfort zone.

I think Winchester Varmint X is better for unwanted coyotes than #4 shot because it is BB lead shot but I have no experience with coyotes.

Does that barrel have a choke? Or is this a Cylinder bore barrel?

If that barrel has no choke you will get lousy patterns with buckshot and birdshot.

I would look for Federal ammo with the Flitecontrol wad or Hornady ammo with the Versatite wad ..... Those produce much tighter patterns.

Yes it has a Invector Plus choke, but I think it's basically a no restriction choke right, it is "Cylinder" choke.

Yeah I figured but since the buckshot is only close range use like max 10 yards I think it will be fine, anyways I will test the spread at the range for sure.

Looks great, I really like the look of a firearm with some colour to it, black can be boring lol 😂
It’s nice to have the ability to run a different choke in there also, there are a ton of options with the Invector Plus tubes. Hope you enjoy it, they are an excellent shotgun for the money 👍

Back from range. It was pretty fun, got used to that kick ha. The worst was the #4 buckshot followed by the bear/deer slugs and then the target slugs.

Over all I'm glad I got it but the bead sight, is the only thing I regret and yeah I think I would have preferred a shotgun with ghost rings. It get difficult to use at and past 50 yards, and don't get me wrong I know this is a shotgun and not it's intended use, but I want to consistently hit that far and with the bead sight it's just really hard to be precise, it hides everything and my head is never consistent with point of aim. I think red dot should do well. I will order Monstrum Tactical shell holder and rail combo, seems to be the only one available for this shotty.

And yeah my Amazon shell holder aren't that great. So that rail and holder combo will replace that to and I'll return it.

There is a good reason why most police forces in North America used Remington 870’s before the AR platform became the go to long gun 25 years ago. Not sure on the latest Remington iteration but the older 870 police models were super reliable and robust and after some training, relatively easy to load, shoot and hit what you were aiming at. Keep it simple - for close quarters a 14 inch barrel with a bead sight and surefire or stream light still works as well today as back then. Whatever you buy, get some decent 8 pellet reduced recoil 00 buck like federal flight control. Lastly, don’t forget to go to the range and pattern your SG at various distances once you settle on your gun and ammo.
I think a smaller pellet would be better less chance of over penetration, like #4 buck 24-27 pellet and maybe single 0 if you need a little more distance

LE agencies conducted much research on appropriate SG loads and had the operational field experience to back it up. The reason many went with the reduced recoil 8 pellet 00 buck was that it combined decent terminal ballistics, met the FBI’s penetration standards, had tighter patterns and eliminated the 9th pellet flier. It is probably the best compromise for a close quarters all round SG round.

The Federal flight control reduced recoil 8 pellet law enforcement round is one of the better ones on the market. Hornady has a similar version but it is hotter and runs a few hundred fps faster. Whatever you land on make sure you pattern it for various distances in your SG.

It is true that the FBI also had an approved #4 buck load but i’m not sure if it was ever used by agents in a lethal force encounter. The issue with sending that many pellets down range is the ethical and legal accountability for errant pellets (potential to hit innocents).
