I'm looking at getting a laminated stock for my Savage 12FV.

The stock maker says the stock is 99% inletted for the action. Just minor sanding around the bolt and at the back of the action and it should slide right in.

His site claims that it'll fit like the wood is growing out of the metal.

I like to think that I understand the idea behind glass bedding an action, but with this type of custom stock is it still necessary?

I would make the adjustments to get it to fit properly, then shoot it. If the results of shooting it are unsatisfactory and you want to bed it, I would pillar bed it.

For generations rifles were assembled by carefully bedding the parts into the wooden stocks. Use a transfer agent like soot, and put the rifle together, adjusting the bedding until you have uniform, extensive contact. Should shoot just fine. If you want to use synthetic bedding or pillars, you could do that too. Synthetic bedding has the reputation for long term stability if properly done.

I recently purchase a laminate stock that is 99% (Microfit) it requires a fare bit of work before I will be able to get the ation into the stock. Barrel channel needs to be cut wider, barrel contour needs to be redone, box mag area needs to be shaped, bolt release area needs to be relieved, a pillar is needed for the rear tang, refinishing and a few odds and ends.

The stock I like a lot but it comes very rough, got several splinters just handling the stock. Minor sanding is really more like moderal sanding and shaping required.

I will be bedding this stock because it'll make the action area more ridgid, because of recoil concerns. I like to work on guns so I don't mine the work so much. Good luck with your search.

Was that the Richards Microfit that you purchased 308BAR?

I'm looking at the Tac Driver model right now and I really like the design. Even if it takes a little more work than the 10 minutes suggested on the website to get the stock to sit just right with the action, I think it would be worth it.

I bought a wildcat /tackdriver stock from them several years ago in cocobolo..... One hell of a nice stock.... it took me about 3 hours to relieve the inletting/barrel channel and then I glass bedded my win 70 , 7mm mag. Once bedded, I then refinished the outside in about another 2 to 3 hours, finishing with a 600 grit. She was a dream to shoot in that stock..... another rifle i shouldna sold :(

Yes it was Richards. IMO it is worth the wait because I’m such a sucker for a good looking laminate stock. I’ll post up some pictures of the stock as is when I get home to give you an idea of what to expect. From what I’ve seen from others on CGN it will turn out to be a work of art. Still deciding if I should checker the stock myself. ;)

I ordered a Richards Tack Driver last summer. Waited 6 months for them to finish it, they called to say it was shipped New Years Eve. Waited another 4 weeks, no stock. Took me 3 weeks more of calling for them to finally tell me that they remembered the stock but can't tell me where it went. Waiting is one thing... Piss poor service and waiting is another. I asked for my money back.

Sorry to hear. I think there's been a mix bag in terms of service from what I gather from other members as well who had ordered from them as well. I order mine in Mid December and received it in February. However I order a more simple stock #102 classic with no add-ons. I will most likely order a few more in the future.
