J Stuart,
When I saw your rifle I figured it was a Remington 40X. I'm glad to see it's being used, but.... that is one of those rifles that should be in pristine condition. :(

Pristine would be worth about $2500.00-$3000.00, I have been using this particular firearm for the last ten years to earn my lively-hood, at a gross of between $45 0000.00 to $60 000.00 a year for ten years I do believe that I can put up with some scratches.
Besides which, I buy firearms to use and when all is said and done it is just a Remington.

I've hunted this one hard the last 2 years. I'm still convinced it's the best high country Mulie gun ever. Even though it's only killed paper so far.

It came with the Sako Action. I was going to replace it with a McMillan and shorten the barrel but after one day at the range I discovered that I like accuracy more than I like plastic and light weight.

you are correct, it is best not to muck about with success.

Here's one I've had since about '71. It was a few years old already when I got it. I don't know how many miles were on it when I got it but since then it's been in the snow, rain in and out of canoes and boats, dragged through swamps and even a few hayfields. I sanded it down after the first season I had it although there were no scratches as I recall and hand applied multiple coats of linseed oil. She aint got a scratch on 'er except for the one on the old Weaver where it rubbed against a tire wrench in the trunk 'bout 30yrs ago.

This one is a mid 70's 700. The only marks on it are a bit of a rub on the left side fore stock checkering from using a set of shooting sticks that the pad came off of. There is not one scratch on or through the finish although there are some marks that are very hard to see and could likely be taken out by the hairdrier method. This rifle has killed hundreds of chucks both off of hay bales or over the hood of the truck. It has seen however not much bad weather since chucks holeup at that time. Useing them doesn't have to mean beating them up. I take pride in these rifles and I take care of them both afield and at home.

The Remington used to sit in a wooden carrybox with rubber mounts underneath and another on the lid of the box that held it firmly secured when latched down during transport. Once in the field she comes out and sits on bags or bales until the time comes. I've carried it quite a few miles to but as I say I take very good care of it and I load for it with as much care. Ifn' yuz a woodchuck don't be in the same fields as this rifle;)

Ifor one totally agree, there's guns in my safe which I will never sell but they all get used.It would be like having a '70 hemi cuda in your garage that you never drive, no fun at all.

Epoxy7, they are just a rifle, not really worth getting hung up on( besides which, they still make them )........but a Farquharson, Savage 99, Brno model 21 or a Waffen Fabrik Oberndorf on the other hand is worth the search, style, class and snob appeal, what more could you ask !
