30-06 talk

In the past I used Winchester ballistic Silver Tips, 168gr in my Tikka T3x and was shooting under 1MOA. I switched to Barnes Vor-TX 168gr this year so as to get a full copper bullet and a little better penetration for moose and elk. The accuracy dropped a little but not too much, still shooting about 2" groups at 100yds.

I use H4350 and H4895 for the lighter bullets. I have used MRP, RL17, RL22 and H4831 in the past. I have loaded 125gr Ballistic Tip for my kid and now for my friend's kids. And a whole bunch of other bullets up to and including 220gr Partitions.

Currently I am using 150gr TSX with H4895. Mild enough recoil for my son but enough jam for pretty much anything.

I believe the .30-06 is the still one of the best balanced cartridge out there.

I run 165’s i the 06 with 4064 or 4350 at close to max looads. Very consistent and sub moa out of my m70, 760 and wby ibex As well as a couple savages. Animals stay down. My garand get 150’s and 4895

Damn I love this thread!! Anything 30-06 is good I think! I will load my browning bar with some 200gn bullets and see if she likes them!! The fact that it is a semiauto, it will make it easy to shoot!

For me it's the 165gr SST over 60.3gr of StaBall 6.5 for 2936fps average out of a 22" Model 70.

I've been meaning to try the 168gr TTSX over a similar charge to see what it can do, that's a great do-all bullet if you can push it hard.

For the past year I was working on a load using the 125 grain bullet. I started-off with the Nosler 125 gr. Ballistic Tip, once I found the load I switched over to the 125 grain Nosler Accubond. All-said-and-done, velocity is 3,301 fps and accuracy is 1/2" groups and less. I wanted to kill a whitetail buck this autumn with it however, I couldn't find the big buck I was after, I settled for tag soup.

Not a 30-06 but I’m following the same idea in the necked down version in 270. 110TTSX at 3320 and a friend is using 110 AccuBond in his 270 at similar velocity. They absolutely work for White Tail and yours will too when you get your chance.

Ask my wife if she thinks the 30-06 is enough for really big game? Two 180 gr into a huge woods bison at around 150 yards and we had just under 1100 pounds of boneless meat in the freezer. Game Branch estimated the live weight at 2400 lb.

Of course she is very good shot, and doesn’t get shook up much.

That bison wasn’t harvested with those 220gr Hornady Interlocks you’ve been testing was it Ted? Inquiring minds would love to know such things.

I have two
One shoots very well with Barnes 150s and 165s, currently trying to come up with a Barnes 130 load for it - really like the idea of a 3200 fps whitetail load.
The other shoots really well with Barnes factory 180s at about 2750 - so well that there is little point in trying to shoot anything else.

A friend started reloading and it was for a Ruger 30-06. His first load was what we suggested , it was RL22 and a 180 Accubond . Fast , accurate and low pressure. Sadly it was also very boring. He moved on. When you hit perfection with your first try, what do you do ?

I have three 30-06s, a pf M-70 , a M-700 and a P-17 BSA sporter, and have loaded for three more. The BSA gave me quite a surprise, I loaded the standard IMR 4350 and a 180gr load and it went way too fast. well into 300WM territory . I had to back off a fair bit. You can't just assume, even with a 30-06 .

I like IMR 4350, it behaves better than the H 4350. I use VV N560 in place of RL 22. Now I would just load a 165 and call it good. But I have a lot of 180 loaded, so I'll stick with that.
