So I've read the BC regs 3 times to see if I can call turkeys (without a gun) pre season. I was planning to take some photos - but I wanted to make sure that I wasn't breaking any laws....

Thanks

LH

You arent breaking the law but what i will say is dont!!. The birds will become call shy becasue they learn the call and after they have been busted a number of times they wont come into calling any more.

I'm not sure about BC, but in Ontario, if you are actively seeking, or chasing wild game, gun or not, you are hunting. Why take a chance of educating the birds? Just put out some food and set up a game cam. Just remember to remove the bait well in advance of you hunting in the area.

First, you clear the field with a snowblower.... Then you get arrested when you start calling. :slap:

Ontario, right now is buried, sorry, couldn't resist.

Calling them? I have to stop when im driving so I dont run over the dumb*sses. Everyday driving into Lindsay. Even if I go another way then normal. I cant wait to take my 2 out.

Even in Ontario I doubt anybody would charge you for pointing a loaded camera at one;). However you do very much take the chance of educatiing turkeys to your calling.
I guess I better get this big boy in the mail:D. Sorry about the pic quality. It is the only digital I have at the moment

Stop teasing me. :)

Sorry to say this, but Co's have had to lay charges of hunting or harrassing on people who want to get up close and persoal with turkeys by photographing them. Some say it is no different than allowing deer hounds run out of season to train them or antis chasing birds in season to prevent hunters from getting a shot or the opposite hunters chasing resting birds to other hunters. You are not allowed to harrass game animals out of season or to hunt in season without a licence that's what fish and game laws are about..

As a DCO I have given people warnings about taking pictures of animals. It was only because they had pulled over on the side of the road and were close to being nailed for trespassing.

I think a CO would look at the situation first. If you are wondering around in a bush with a camera they might have an issue. I cant see it being an issue if you are pulled over somewhere and not tresspassing. There is a line where observing and harrassing fall.

Gotta love Ontario

Well yes in Ontario if your decked out in full camo...up against a tree calling to bring birds into you.....your dahm well hunting! I had a jack $ss do that last year to us and tresspass to boot. He admitted to it and the MNR and I had a little chat. They were more than happy to lay charges if I was happy to be a witness of him in the act with photos that date stamp. Instead the land owner and I made a personal visit to his residence and tooned him in. Photographers do require hunting licenses too eh! But as others have said before..pre-season scouting and calling will educate birds ...and you certainly do not want that.

Me and My old Nikon F2 will be photagraphing Tundra Swans in the next week or two. If I camo out and hide along the side of a corn field that means I'm technicaly hunting? No CO in this area would even consider charging me for that. Roger Tory Peterson and Pierre Burton come to the same spot as I do. Try charging one of those guys for pointing a loaded camera;)
