Why are there no major Canadian hunting rifle brands?

The cost of company startup is enormous. The risk is also huge. So we’re not likely to get another “Cooey” type of startup.

Previous companies that have been edged out by better prices USA made ones. So Canada can’t compete based on the value market. Even moreso now that there are other companies which can produce them even cheaper.
We can compete only on quality, and that’s a small market here.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I was under the impression that our Savage factory has been American owned for many years.

We have some premium quality manufacturers but nobody here can compete based on bottom dollar with our costs. It’s too much cheaper to do it on most of the rest of the world.

cooey was the only mass produced firearm
because or country is no firearm friendly no one willl invest billions to close down i a few years
if you think it's a lucrative business
get at it
even rimington win marlin have all failed over the last 100 years many times
it very obvious that the lack of knowledge and experience is prevalent on this subject
the shift in the industry to plastic stocks and pressed in bbl 's is to sell firearms not to build a better gun

Most people want to be paid top dollars but want to get stuff for free…. That doesn’t work that way! Up here dealership charge $150/hr to work on your vehicle, trades people other than carpenters, are now at $125/hr, but the guy that is building a custom firearm or something completely made in house should give is working away because you can buy a rifle made as cheap as possible for $600? Yes that $600 rifle will kill deer just as dead as the 10k rifle but that isn’t the point!!
I don’t know what you guys do for a living but obviously some don’t have a clue of the cost of things now a day!!

Yeah and made while Elvis was still alive. What’s your point? It was made in Canada. My point was it’s a shame we don’t do it anymore

Then stop voting Liberal. We would not find ourselves where we are if gun owners were not voting Liberal. I have seen the firearms industry in Canada change DRAMATICALLY over my lifetime. It was not because of my voting preferences either.

This discussion of firearms has nothing to do with cost to carry on business, and has everything to do with successive Liberal governments hell bent on eliminating firearms form our society. Can you not figure that out?

How many firearm retailers have gone out of business due to the bans, and the ones that are hanging on by the skin of their teeth? I was talking to one of the largest firearm retailers this fall, and the owner said they are trying to expand their base into items not firearm related. What does that tell you?

Likely because everyone in canada used a surplus enfield through the first 75 years of the twentieth century. Tough market when your competition is a $10 rifle you pick out of a barrel at your local hardware store and surplus ammo was pennies. Canadians were more practical then and couldn’t be bothered spending more on a hunting rifle when the enfield was just as effective.

You are way off subject here my friend! It as all to do with cost of production lol that is the question asked by the op!! As nothing to do with the biggest retailer in the world as nothing to do with who you voted for, it has all to do with the price of materials and cost of living!

Well antler Arms makes nice pieces although they do start around $2500.
Way too expensive when I can get 5lbs of carrots for the price of 1/2 a local carrots….
But of course it is the voters faults…
Life is too short for that crap, buy what ever you think is better and cheaper cause better and cheaper usually goes hand in hand…
( that is not directed at you Tallcooldrink, but to everyone that think more than $600 for a rifle is a waste of money! )

At least the American companies keep the prices somewhat reasonable, even if they do take over.
Leave it to Canada and you're paying 2-3times as much for the same.
And that's because Canadian business in squeezed between socialist scum who want to driven them down and out and foreign competition which has huge advantages of scale, and of course leverage to get what they want politically.
Sounds like there’s a few poor people in the crowd.
I make no assumptions about what the OP wants to spend. We all love variety and fine design and workmanship, but most of us also know it very often doesn't mean more durable or more accurate.
And not all Canadian lol! Up here we would be hard pressed to make a liter of it same with BC lol
Actually a pretty darn good maple syrup can be made from western maples; I knew someone who used to make it. There's quite group of people doing it too.

I'm pretty sure COLT in Kitchener Ontario is doing OK.

Kind of a #### head thing to say.

Let's see your collection.

People have budgets, families and likely more pressing important financial goals and dont want the expensive guns.

You can change the oil in your car with $30 wrenches from Canadian Tire or $3000 from the SNAP ON truck , you get the same result.

Same as a dead deer, you can get one with a $400 Savage Axis or a $4000 Browning.

Come-on, $10,000, and they don't even come with a wood stock. I'm not that patriotic for Canada; for that price I'll purchase something from Austria or Germany.
All the fine Canadian hardwood available and it comes with Dollar store plastic

It's what people see as relative worth.

Some art lovers will pay $100K for paint splashed on a canvas by a Monkey.
Looks no different than a million other preschoolers fingerprint session.
