Yay!

I have grown a pair, and stood up against the wrath of SWMBO to order myself a Marlin Papoose... Of course, my bride doesn't KNOW yet...

Oh well, looking forward to receiving it in about a week or so, and seeing how it does killing paper, before I pop it in my BOB.

Does anyone suggest a good source for RELIABLE 10 round mags for the little Marlin?

Cheers,

Neal

Congratulations on your purchase!

The Papoose comes with a 7 round mag, but the standard Marlin 10 round mag fits it. Wholesale Sports usually has them in stock, the go for $18.99 each.

Can we see a pic of this papoose?

I got one two summers ago after seeing an article about the supressed version in Small Arms Review. Of course I can't get that one, but I picked-up the standard one from LaBarons, yes did actually have it in stock.

It is a great little rifle to take either as a back-up gun or just an easy to carry plinker. I also have one of the Henry Survival Rifles as well and the Papoose doesn't have the feeding issues it has.

I think the Papoose would be a great BOB rifle...but the Henry still stows better...;)

I picked one up out of the EE forum last summer, I've done some plinking with it and it seems to shoot really well. I'm planning to use mine to shoot ptarmagin when I go up chasing goats. It's compact enough to put in my pack and doesn't weigh to much. The other bonus is that it'll be a lot better if I get caught with this Ptaragin gun that the other one that has seen a trip or two...

It's here! It's here! It's finally here!!!

Okay, so IF I survive letting the wife know I have ANOTHER rifle, I plan to get out to the range maybe tomorrow...

That said, first impressions:

I like the bolt h.o.d. - Why Ruger has never come up with something for the 10/22, I just don't understand, particularly as they have become so liability conscious...

I DON'T like the level of finishing on the parts - Almost as bad as Ruger for a lack of smoothing cast bits, or filing of rough machined edges.

I am also without the foam packing bit that is supposed to come in the nylon case - The retailer is excellent, and I KNOW that he ordered this rifle in just for me, so it ain't his fault. The wholesaler, maybe...? They are pricks, but the only people locally. That said, I WOULD have e-mailed Marlin directly to enquire as to whether they would just send me a bit of foam, BUT.... They have no e-mail address listed on thier website. HELLO???? I mean, hey, I'm a technophobe, but even I have been using e-mail for more than a decade now.

Join the frickin' times, Marlin?

Anyway, I have mailed them a request....

That said, she goes together solidly, and even though I hate open sights, the hi-vis front post is not too bad.

Will post more once I have shot the wee creature.

TTFN,

Neal

Oh Brother..... how I can relate to that!!

If I buy another gun any time soon, my wife will have me committed to an institution. :D

Have fun with the new "addition" Neal!

Was in the same boat with contacting Marlin. I would never complain about their products but they should get up on the times as far as communications.

So, first and foremost, to those who were in mortal fear of me losing my life, a limb, or permanent residence... The revelation to my better half that I had brought home another orphan was met with nary an eye roll and sigh, prior to my dearest proclaiming "It IS cute".

So, domestic bliss continues...

THAT said, the wee papoose has now also been to the range for the first time under my care - First shooting impressions:

The trigger is awful. I mean AWFUL. It must be about ten pounds or so! Hopefully things will break in a bit, but I swear that my DA pistol has a lighter pull!

The sights are off left about 4" at 25m range. I think I was putting things into about 1.5 - 2" groups, but aiming off is something that I have nearly forgotten since my militia days. Will have to figure out whether one should push the rear sight, or the plastic front sight blade over.

In about 60 rounds fired today, had one stovepipe ejection, and three instances where the closing bolt did not pick up the round in the magazine - All 3 occurrences with the second round in the mag. It IS possible that with the tiny little fore-end (or lack thereof), I may have been yanking back on the magazine, and this may have been a factor. Was shooting Federal high velocity HP.

Anyway, she does seem to clean up real easy, although for the life of me, I WISH that someone would design a .22 that doesn't need a screwdriver to take apart.

Hopefully, as parts wear in, reliability in cycling will improve, the trigger will lighten up some, and I can figure out which sight to push... Unless I put a little red dot or telescope on her.

Will update with next session killing the paper.

Cheers,

Neal

I doubt the trigger will improve much...I've got a well used papoose and the trigger is still quite stiff.
I've just learned to accept it and pull with the second segment of my finger to avoid strain.
I put a red dot on mine and can hit golf balls with ease at 25 yards using bulk federal.

2nd range trip with optics

Okay, so today the wee Papoose got her second trip to the range, with a tasco 4X telescope now mounted.

Once I got the optics zeroed, I was pretty happy - Typical 25m group below. Obviously, four of the rounds are pretty tight, and I'm sure I can be blamed for the spread of the other three! What really made me happy was that with both Federal bulk pack, AND with Remington subsonic, I had no obvious change in POI, nor did I have more than one FTF - Probably an ammo issue, as it went bang the second time it was struck. Feeding and ejection was flawless!

Anyway, I am very happy with the Papoose now - Too bad I failed to pay attention to the mounting screws on the telescope, and they must have vibrated loose; Scope slid off mounts when I was reassembling after cleaning - Will have to re-zero, but am satisfied enough with the wee rifle that I will now have to get a couple of ten round mags, and she can live in the B.O.B.!

Cheers,

Neal

Do you know where to get the 10 round mags? I am looking for some myself.

Wholesale Sports carries them. That's where I picked up the one that is with your Papoose. ;)

Just cut and paste the link below into your address bar.

Thanks, I actaully forgot mine came with one! I want 2 more still.
I can't wait to try it out, my dad is not a big fan of guns but he was playing with the papoose when it came and he likes it a lot.
(I am leaving the north in a few months so I sent it to my parents place in NS to the confused ones)
