Lets see your pre 64 model 70's

I honestly don’t know, these are all pieces Iv put together through old notes, memories as a kid, stories past on and news clippings. A lot comes from my 72 y/o dad who remembers most of it, but is a bit foggy. I believe the Taylor came to be right around that same time, and I believe is based off the .458wm so good chance he caught wind of it and wanted to try it. The barrel is stamped RCBS 375-338, with no mention of Taylor on it, but the brass that came with the rifle is stamped .458 Wm, and also some stamped .375 h&h. Looking at photos online, it looks a lot like the Taylor.

Something I noticed with my fired brass though, is the shoulder looks sharper on my fired brass. I’m thinking they haven’t been fire formed yet maybe. These are from .458 Wm brass.

I would say you are exactly right. The ones with “rounded” shoulders have just been run through the sizing die and haven’t been fired yet.

Im prepared for the roasting, but here is my Father's Pre64. It belonged to my Grandfather, but I rebuilt it into something a little more modern.
It was quite a process, for those who might be interested I documented it here:

The aluminum Weaver two piece sight bases have a wide groove or trough running length wise that allows easy sight access to the iron sights. I've been replacing the aluminum Weaver bases with Leupold steel bases on my pre-64 M70's. The leupold bases are flat across the top with no wide groove and I still see both front and rear sights clearly. This was a consideration on both my 300 H&H and 375 H&H when I recently mounted new Leupolds on both using Leupold QRW2 rings (quick release) on both.

I remember this thread from years ago some beautiful 70's here, when I joined CGN someone on the EE had a model 70 I think it was a pre 64 can't remember that far back, anyway it was a safari model with the hooded front site chambered In 375 H&H, it was just like the one i drooled 🤤 over as a kid in a guns and ammo magazine. But 1000 bucks was more than I could afford at the time but dam I would have loved to get my hands on it.

After having regretted selling my first ever pre '64 Model 70, which was also in .270 Win, a few years back, I'm happy to report, with the help of a couple fellow CGN'ers, I find myself in recent acquisition of another decent example. It's 1955 vintage:

Your saying that a magnet won't stick to the ss barrels, why would that be?

Oops.... just noticed that post was from 2017.

SS is not generally magnetic, very light at best.
Another way to authenticate a SS barrel. They were treated with some type of iron coating in order to be blued.
Thus is the 1950s don't forget.

Blowback

I sold my other 1959 Pre-64 in 375 H&H and replaced it with one from 1953, the same year as my 300 H&H. This latest one I installed Leupold steel bases and Leupold quick release steel rings and mounted a VX-3i with Alumina covers. Also upgraded my pre-64 338 Win Mag with Leupold steel bases and steel rings as well as a VX-3 B&C with Alumina covers.

Tell me that wasn't mine brother...

Waiting on the delivery of a 1947 sporter in 30-06 right now....was thinking of scoping it using a slim, lightweight scope OR trying aperture sights. Looks like there are some nice ones out there.

Does anyone have a favorite set for the Model 70s? Skinner's looks good but I don't know if it works with a factory front sight. Guess something like a Foolproof type would be the best bet?

I have always loved these rifles in original condition. I finally got my hands on the one I wanted and have a few more in the works over the next while. I bought this one from a well known and respected CGN member, just took some convincing that he wanted to part with it.

Here is my all original 1958 Winchester 70 in 300H&H:

I recently had my paws on two pre war model 70's, one in 300H&H and one in .270. I have a feeling some serious money might be needed to pry them from the owners hands though :(
Can't beat the classics

What combo of bases/rings/optic do you guys recommend so that the bolt handle doesn't drag on the ocular bell/eyepiece? (1947 if that matters)
