Just picked up the one I've wanted really badly for a few years yesterday, thanks to a great CGNer. My first M70. It's a 1954 in 300 H&H.
Got this one recently, after a very long search. 1957 manufacture, 270 fwt. It will end up in a good synthetic and become my main hunting rifle, hopefully this year.

Very nice. Contrary to popular internet opinion, I still like the 270.
Wow!
What's the serial number?
pre 64 fwt, 270. Took me a while to find one at a reasonable price, it is going nowhere!

Nice rilfe....also interested in knowing the story on the lumber? Reworked factory or....?
I have always loved these rifles in original condition. I finally got my hands on the one I wanted and have a few more in the works over the next while. I bought this one from a well known and respected CGN member, just took some convincing that he wanted to part with it.
Here is my all original 1958 Winchester 70 in 300H&H:
I recently had my paws on two pre war model 70's, one in 300H&H and one in .270. I have a feeling some serious money might be needed to pry them from the owners hands though![]()
In '53 Winchester was doing a barrel clean up to reduce inventory. There was a 25" ss barrel available in the Supergrade, but was not an option on standard rifles. So you couldn't order one if you wanted, not an option. Here's where it gets interesting; in '53 for sure they were screwing on 25" ss barrels to standard rifles and sending them out to dealers. They are matte blued, no bluing on muzzle end and breech forcing cone, and won't be magnetic.
I have one. The Blue Book of gun values adds a 30% premium to these rifles. Pays to check!
