Lets see your pre 64 model 70's

Are there any telltale signs for a Stainless barrel? It's like brand new inside. I believe the stock has been refinished, but that's ok. I bought it to bring home elk (gently!).

Shoots very well too. Four in a hole, one pulled low. This was shooting 168 Gmax's over 74gr of H4831, at 100m.

308 featherweight

Thought about selling this one, then I hit the range which ended that stupid idea! Successive 100 yard groups, two different powder charges.

In '53 Winchester was doing a barrel clean up to reduce inventory. There was a 25" ss barrel available in the Supergrade, but was not an option on standard rifles. So you couldn't order one if you wanted, not an option. Here's where it gets interesting; in '53 for sure they were screwing on 25" ss barrels to standard rifles and sending them out to dealers. They are matte blued, no bluing on muzzle end and breech forcing cone, and won't be magnetic.
I have one. The Blue Book of gun values adds a 30% premium to these rifles. Pays to check!

Got this one recently, after a very long search. 1957 manufacture, 270 fwt. It will end up in a good synthetic and become my main hunting rifle, hopefully this year.

Never, had to post in this thread before, as I am more of a Winchester lever guy, but picked up this 1960 dated African Supergrade 458 Win Mag. Gun is at least 98% overall condition, does not even look fired. I think it has been put away since the 60s. Quite the rifle. I understand they only made 1226 of them. Cannot be a pile of them around.

270 fwt

A 1955 270 fwt in a mcmillan compact edge, leupold dual dovetails and a leupold 3.5x10. Nothing fancy, but I would be hard pressed to build a better setup for what/where/how I hunt. I also have the 1957 270 fwt in the monte carlo factory stock, for nice days and shorter walks!

Nice rilfe....also interested in knowing the story on the lumber? Reworked factory or....?

That is a factory stock which was quite ugly and needed re-shaping. I re-checkered in a pattern just like the original factory checkering; simple and not too much coverage. This was done, not out of any sense of style but because I was too lazy to do anything elaborate. After this, I built myself a 256 Newton but on a Model 54 action. Nice enough but I never liked it as much as I did this one. The original stock is a very comfortable stock to carry. The rounded edges fit the hand. The curve of the grip on the pre-64 is just right and this one retains the radius but has been slimmed a bit. Plainly, the fore arm is shortened and slimmed and the Monte Carlo comb is slightly altered in profile. All in all, I was not displeased although, in retrospect, I could have been a little more generous with the checkering!
The 1964 stock was a bit of a pig but the 1968 stock was quite nicely shaped and there was a decent stock hiding within. After the pre-64 stock, the 1968 came closest to being a good handling stock IMO; though it did need a little help cosmetically. The newest stocks are a bit on the bulky side and just don't handle well, at least to me, but I think there is a stock in there somewhere. The grip radius is still great.

I have always loved these rifles in original condition. I finally got my hands on the one I wanted and have a few more in the works over the next while. I bought this one from a well known and respected CGN member, just took some convincing that he wanted to part with it.

Here is my all original 1958 Winchester 70 in 300H&H:

I recently had my paws on two pre war model 70's, one in 300H&H and one in .270. I have a feeling some serious money might be needed to pry them from the owners hands though :(

what would it cost to buy one of these?

Your saying that a magnet won't stick to the ss barrels, why would that be?

Oops.... just noticed that post was from 2017.
