Looking for SxS or O/U information and advice

Hey all,

I am currently in the market for another 12g, ideally I want an O/U but I am open to SxS options, if it's the right setup.
(Mainly for grouse but I may use it for other hunting tasks or skeet as well). I already have pumps and semi's, so I am not looking for one of those.

Edit: I am ideally looking for something around 1k+/- but I am not limited to that.
It must have ejectors (not extractors) and be robust/reliable/well made.
I am not interested in any Turkish shotguns though.

I have looked at some Baikal O/U's and a couple others but I am admittedly more of a modern firearm shooter, so I don't know all the ins and outs with all the various makers of SxS's or O/U's out there, like I do my modern rifles and shotguns.
Any info or advice from the more experienced double barrel shooters out there is majorly appreciated and welcomed. Thanks guys!

Choose between well made and $500, you won't get both in an O/U or a SxS. Even $1000 will be difficult at best.
 
Find a old Browning superposed
Sometimes one will come up for sale around 8-900 bucks

Will be hands down better than anything available new at three times that price….

Browse through intersurplus, you might find something.
 
You can find old Baikal , Brno , FeG and many more.
There is two problems with them.
Fixed chokes , and no parts if anything brakes.

Those are fair points. Like I said I'm not familiar with the price ranges of these type of guns.

When I think well made, I don't mean a top tier European made or something. It's literally only being used for shooting slow, dumb birds at like 10 yards, so I don't need anything fancy. Just something that works well and won't break easily.
What if I increase my budget to $1500, do you have any suggestions?

Yeah, I'm thinking you're right by the sounds of things. I didn't factor in the parts availability.

What would you suggest if I increase my budget to say $1500?

At $1500, you might find an older Browning or Beretta with fixed chokes. For ground swatting grouse, an old Cooey single is cheap and reliable.

Yeah, my hunting buddies use modified 10/22's mainly but I am hesitant to build another one when it's very, very likely getting banned soon. I have done that dance too many times.
Thinking of an O/U cuz i like the design and it's a classic kind of shotgun.
 
It really boils down to whether you can live with fixed chokes, and possibly trigger arrgt (single vs double). An Ithaca SKB or a Browning BSS with IC and Mod chokes would likely fit your budget...
 
There is a BrowningBSS 12 with fixed mod/improved cylinders for just under fifteen hundred. Made in Japan 1972. Pics look good and says it hasn’t been shot much. Check for lever being right of center. Cheers

OP, look at the banner advertisers ads. Intersurplus has both O/U and SxS types of shotguns, in 410, 16, 20, and 12gauge, in all grades and many different makes/models.

I've purchased a couple of their offerings and if anything, their grading system describes the "real" quality of the firearm lower than what it really is.

I've never felt like I paid to much.

If you're used to shooting pumps/semi autos, O/U and SxS shotguns can pose a bit of a challenge for some folks.

Proper fit to the shooter makes a huge difference. Stock height, offset stock for better sight acquisition, length of pull to the trigger, dual triggers and even exposed hammers.

SxS are my personal favorites, but O/U types are best for those used to pumps/semi autos.

Depending on what you're going to hunt, you may find the 20 gauge offerings more suitable, and I've seen more than one excellent trap/skeet shooter using them.

16 gauge ammo can be difficult to find in shootable quantities at times, depending on where you live.

Yeah. I have checked out Intersurplus, thats where I looked at some Bakail's.
I have experience shooting O/U and SxS before, they're just not my go too shotguns so I don't know all the details on brands/makers or what makes one better than another. They're pretty simple guns to me but I would like one that the wood isn't cracked and will likely not fall apart on me.
I am definitely open to either O/U or SxS and think either style would work well for my needs.

There is a Valmet 412 in the EE. In great shape.
Asking $1050. Seems to be basically what I'm looking for design wise and price wise.
I know a bit about Valmet centerfire rifles but are their O/U's any good?
 
Another vote for Intersurplus. You should be able to easily buy a grouse gun for under 1000.00, either sxs or o/u. Don't be put off by brand names you don't recognize. Most are made by reputable large European gun manufacturers. For example, I bought a Techni-Mec O/U for my daughter. Who ever heard of that, but its made by Rizinni.

Any firearm not properly taken care of can be a lemon.

It's pretty hard to go wrong with a Valmet. They're built for harsh conditions and stand up well, but for that price, the shotgun should be close to Excellent for condition.
