338 vs 300 win?

Love my 338 Win Mag. Very versatile and accurate if you handload. It's a real thumper on moose with either 225 or 250 partitions or Hornady interlocks. Shoots fast and relatively flat with 200 Accubonds. It's a real bear killer as well! Recoil isn't as bad as some will tell you, certainly not much worse that 300WM.

Out of similar weight rifles I didnt find it eye openingly different either

Of the two I did choose the 338 WM due to heavier bullets available with better BC. I find the recoil pretty much the same for both. The 300WM shoots slightly flatter. From my experience I have found that the 300WM creates more bloodshot meat.

We are splitting hairs here because both are great IMO, but as I mentioned I chose the 338WM and have no regrets.

300 WM Barnes 208 gr LRX BT, .633 BC@2900+fps vs 338 WM 250 gr LRX BT, .602 BC@ sub 2600 fps (Barnes published data)

Have rifles chambered in both calibers. Have taken plenty of moose etc., with both. So I agree, splitting hairs. The .300 can and does the job very well. It's also more versatile, in my opinion. where mixed game is encountered. Though the .338 is certainly not overkill either, for deer-sized game. Having taken quite a few with the caliber. Still, the .338 is my go-to, when game gets big or nasty. Hard to argue with the punch of a 225-250 grain bullet. A very easy cartridge to load for, too. With plenty of good bullet choices to select from.
In the end, select the one that you like best and shoot the most comfortably.

338 all day the bigger diameter lays them out. Have shot the 300’s and the 338 and 358 tend to drop them in their tracks.. also prefer for the g bears which can try to wreck your day.

I would beg to differ...
Ruger No.1 literaly put me into concussion protocol.
That is just though, others may find otherwise.
300 WinMag will tcb of most Moose within the range they are capable of shooting.
As always, Just my opinion.

A lot of people say that, but it seems a lot worse to me. I don’t have either of them, but have shot both. Shot the 300 in a fairly light savage…I think it was a 110…I didn’t find it too bad. A friend of mine has an old Remington 700 in 338…weighs a ton, and it will turn your shoulder into a black and blue mess 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Considering the 300wm is already too much gun for a lot of people, it's no surprise to me that some think a 338wm is a lot with its ~35% increase in recoil energy.
