For a long distance target rifle the easiest path is a bolt action.
That's why I am planning on a 3000$ bolt-action and probably just as much for a scope. Expensive, but it is a once in a lifetime thing.

If they let me keep it. Given their hatred of anything that isnt wooden furniture and their hate of magazine fed anything (probably going to extend to tube magazine or fixed magazines that need to be loaded one at a time) even that would be a prohib that they would want to take away and give me the price of a soda for.

Is it good as a long distance target rifle?

Any semi auto is going to be less precise than an equivalently priced bolt action. Sure you can find fairly precise AR-10 (not in Canada mind you) but it'll cost $4K or more... And it will be as precise as a Savage Axis worth 1/8th the price.

Bullseye North can pipe in here, but I haven't seen any accuracy reports of the Adler AD500 yet. I'm happy to be wrong but assuming it's a 2-3 minute of angle rifle, then at 800m your groups will be 24 inches diameter - without considering wind or ranging errors or the variability of factory ammo. You'll miss a 12" gong at that distance far more often than you will hit...

Compare that to an equivalently priced bolt action (pretty much any offering from Savage, Bergara, some Remingtons, Howas) which will usually be a 1 or 1.5 minute of angle rifle - or 3 times as precise, and you will hit that gong (or an animal's vitals) every time if the shooter does their work.

For me, if I were to buy an Adler AD500 it would be for hunting within a 100-150 meters (stalking in dense bush or shooting from a blind) so I could have a fast follow up shot in case I didn't hit the right spot. It's for that reason I see semi autos as the most ethical hunting option, contrary to the fed gov't opinion on the matter.
