Interest in 338 Federal

I am a big fan of the 308 but the 338 federal just seems to have a greater "No more footsteps for you" effect on game. I have the 760 in 338 federal and a gen one Troy PAR in 338 federal and neither have ever disappointed. I believe I would be hard pressed to shoulder a better bush hammer.

Many good cartridges based on the 308 Win case have hit the market over the yrs. Lots of interesting wildcat loads as well.
I like the 338 Fed for its' performance on game at sensible ranges but never had the urge to get one. Never needed 'er.

WDM Bell mentioned in one his last interviews before tipping over was that he could have done just as well with the 308 Win on dangerous
game in Africa as he did with the 7x57 Mauser/275 Rigby.

I'd have fun with the 375 Raptor version of the 308 case meself though.

It's a bit of an inside joke , I'm in SE Asia for the winter . Black Watch 357 got one of his 338 Feds from me , a Remington 760 Deluxe that belonged to Blargon originally . The other rifle is a 358 that I put together last year , it's built on a pre war 98 with a Ron Smith gain twist barrel , actually Rembo spun the barrel on for me ,very nice . Black Watch will put them to better use than I will , he already has with the 338 Fed . I have a sickness , I love building rifles . I also get more pleasure out of giving them to friends and family , Black Watch 357 is family , and seeing them enjoy , what I consider to be , truly useful firearms .

Sounds like a nice rifle. And I wish I was back in SE Asia. - dan

Years back I built a wildcat 338-08, I liked the cartridge. Really didn't do anything my 358 BLR didn't do, but if I was starting from scratch I think I would do a 338 Federal on a Savage 99. - dan
I had Paul Cook spin a medium weight sporter barrel on my ā€˜76 vintage 99 a few years ago; it was something I wanted to do for years as well. A couple notes of caution; in my particular rifle the max COAL length that I can load to and have the magazine not bind is 2.770ā€, which means that factory ammo has to be seated 0.030ā€ deeper or not used at all. I’ve been working on building a load with Speer 200 grain hot cors and H335, but never got great results. I’ve since switched to 748, but I’ll be damned if I can find time to actually get to the range for testing. I was going to try 200 grain flat points designed for the 33 Winchester, but they are too wide at the nose and also bind. Maybe the 180 grain Woodleigh is a better fit for this rifle, or maybe even the 160 ttsx - but it takes time that has been diverted for other domestic issues.

I really like the concept of the cartridge; basically a shorter 8x57 for most purposes.

We are -35*C this weekend... that is an 80*C differential between us.
My buddy came home from a year abroad in Aus in a February on a Tuesday. Friday we went camping in Manning Park, overnight lows of -35 sleeping in tents. Needless to say it was a bit of a shock to his system lol

Meanwhile here on the coast...
