Thanks for that m, but I must have been unclear in my question, sometimes things get lost in translation hahaha
What I wanted to know is if building a 338 federal, and want to use heavy for caliber bullets like 215gr seated out as far as practical would the magazine of a short action be long enough for them long bullets?
It should be. I built my 338-08 on a K98 Mauser action. I seat the base of the bullet even with the base of the neck.
This is my recipe.
Overall length from base of bullet to tip at spire point = 2.850, with the case mouth rim in the cannelure of the bullets I have on hand. 225 gr Hor. IL
= 2.870, with Hor 225 SST, cannelure .125 off case mouth (likely too long?)
Cases = Federal
Powder = Win 748 - 45.0 grains - velocity 2485fps +- 15fps
Primer = CCI250 - It makes for consistent velocities during very cold weather or at high elevations.
Barrel is a six groove Schilen Match grade 3/4 inch at the muzzle. Heavy, but the balance is perfect for off hand shooting.
It has a standard issue trigger, with the lever spring cut back 1.5 coils, sear/cocking piece engagement honed for sharp let off and two coils removed from the firing pin spring. Makes for appx three pound trigger pull.
The stock is a Bell and Carlson, which I pillar bedded. Rifle will shoot sub moa right out to 200 yds, which is the furthest I've checked it at and where it is zeroed to hit point of aim. It shoots appx 2 1/2 inches high at 100yds.
Scope is an old 4X40 Burriss fixed power, made in the US, but sharp, clear, repeatable adjustments. For the distances I shoot this rifle it's more than adequate on game such as Deer and Black Bears, as well as one very unlucky Moose.
Both bullets expand perfectly, by the exit holes, but I've never recovered any from game I've shot. They've always gone through and through.
