Interest in 338 Federal

It is a very interesting place , the worst place on earth to drive around in , but interesting .
Yes, their gridlock is astonishing. I walked, a lot. When I worked up in Ipoh things were better, but not as much to do for a foreigner. In KL I used to hit The Ship, a little pub not far from the Westin hotel. - dan

Just wondering, if one would be building a 338 federal, what length action would be best! What is the max COAL for a short action magazine?

20 inches is just about perfect.

I started with a 26 inch take off barrel, chambered for the 338-06 Jordan, I cut off the threads, which weren't for the action I was using, and rechambered to 338-08 (This was before the 338 Federal was legitimized.)

You can't get enough suitable powder into the case to utilize the bore capacity of a longer barrel, so why carry the extra length around?

I cut it off at 22 inches and again at 20 inches. There wasn't 10fps difference between them.

I only shoot 225 grain bullets out of mine anyway. It's not a long range cartridge, and you want as much energy on the target as possible.

A 225 grain, flat base, spire point, hornady IL at 2500fps is devastating on any game animal out to 300yds, and beyond.

It's not intended for shots over 250 yards, but it will reach out another 100 yds if you know the distance and compensate for trajectory.

Thanks for that m, but I must have been unclear in my question, sometimes things get lost in translation hahaha
What I wanted to know is if building a 338 federal, and want to use heavy for caliber bullets like 215gr seated out as far as practical would the magazine of a short action be long enough for them long bullets?

Oh and who have the 338 federal in there factory line up, savage 11 I think but can’t seem to find any others.?!?

It should be. I built my 338-08 on a K98 Mauser action. I seat the base of the bullet even with the base of the neck.

This is my recipe.

Overall length from base of bullet to tip at spire point = 2.850, with the case mouth rim in the cannelure of the bullets I have on hand. 225 gr Hor. IL
= 2.870, with Hor 225 SST, cannelure .125 off case mouth (likely too long?)

Cases = Federal

Powder = Win 748 - 45.0 grains - velocity 2485fps +- 15fps

Primer = CCI250 - It makes for consistent velocities during very cold weather or at high elevations.

Barrel is a six groove Schilen Match grade 3/4 inch at the muzzle. Heavy, but the balance is perfect for off hand shooting.

It has a standard issue trigger, with the lever spring cut back 1.5 coils, sear/cocking piece engagement honed for sharp let off and two coils removed from the firing pin spring. Makes for appx three pound trigger pull.

The stock is a Bell and Carlson, which I pillar bedded. Rifle will shoot sub moa right out to 200 yds, which is the furthest I've checked it at and where it is zeroed to hit point of aim. It shoots appx 2 1/2 inches high at 100yds.

Scope is an old 4X40 Burriss fixed power, made in the US, but sharp, clear, repeatable adjustments. For the distances I shoot this rifle it's more than adequate on game such as Deer and Black Bears, as well as one very unlucky Moose.

Both bullets expand perfectly, by the exit holes, but I've never recovered any from game I've shot. They've always gone through and through.

I like longer actions that allow you to seat out bullets. A 2.8" magazine in a 700 can get a bit crowded.

As Rem Jim said, a T3 would be a great place to start, but then I would be tempted to try to find a factory Tikka in 338Fed.

Thanks guys. Ideally it would be to find a factory offering, would be cheaper I think. If I win the lottery I would go with the Alpine rifle craft zenith but other than being lucky it won’t happen lol
But I guess any mauser action would work too, like a husky 1640 or 1900??

I’ve read that a lot of people have reported excellent accuracy with the Woodleigh bullets, so I ordered a batch of 200 grainers from Prophet River while they have them. I’m going to try 748 and use Varget as a last resort.
