Lightest M-14 stock: JAE-100 G2, or Troy MCS, or Sage EBR Chopmod

I'm planning (maybe just dreaming) of building an M-14 with an 18.5 inch standard profile barrel for close and medium shots. I'm not planning on building a long range sniper rifle.

Which of the following stocks is the lightest upgrade to an M-14 and who sells them in Canada?
- JAE-100 G2 (I know Wolverine Supplies offers the JAE stock.)
- Troy MCS
- Sage EBR Chopmod
 
The JAE is a great stock, but if you put all the bells and whistles on it, it isn't light. You can lose a couple of pounds if you keep it stripped down. No palm rest, off hand support, or side rails. I think fully loaded it weighs in at about 7 pounds. I know with a scope and bi pod, I wouldnt want to carry mine very far without a wheelbarrow.
 
I was reading on the net (which means its true, right :confused: ) that the usgi syth stocks ended up leaving the rifle front heavy..

My question is, it is noticably irritatingly so? Or would you never notice w/o some sort of scale...

Unfortunatly I'll have to leave mine in the chu-wood for about 18 months .. :eek:
 
Of the 3 you listed the SAGE CQB with the AR buffer tube is the lightest.
I like the Magpul CTR with a snap on cheek rest.

The MCS and G2 are quite a bit heavier.




The lightest stock I have is the Chu wood that came with one of my Poly Tech rifles.

A shortened barrel and a USGI fiberglass stock will make all the difference in the world. You wouldn't think a few inches would change it that much, but anyone that's handled one like this will tell you there's a huge, for the better, difference in balance, handling and pointability over the stock configuration.
 
the JAE is a bench /sniper target stock...... not really meant to be "fielded" It's ergonomics and weight being the downside for a "carry" rifle.
if you want long range fun off the bench...... or if you are shootin long range with a scope and bipod ie gophers :D the JAE is THE stock to consider

MCS stocks are not permitted to be exported out of the u.s.

sage stocks..... not sure what the deal is on export/import

fiberglass pistol grip stocks seem to be the way to go..... p.m. me for details ;)

I was thinking of getting a JAE-100 myself - they look solid and very well made (not to mention I like the aesthetics). I'm not a big fan of a pistol grip on a rifle of this sort (well for this particular one I'm putting together). So, that would leave, what? The USGI (can't find info yet) or the JAE?

Now, I know I could probably search for it, but how does one get the barrel shortened? Gunsmith I'm assuming...

Ellwood epps does barrel shortening...... but best deal i've found... and they are close to me so no shipping.... is Dlask arms corp in b.c. ( not a dealer here)
jae can be aquired through wolverine
usgi stocks ( and all m14 stocks) are under export control by u.s. state dept and the actual usgi m14 fiberglass stock is not being made anymore to the best of my knowledge.
companies such as mcmillan, viron, and a couple others make thier own fiberglass versions.... often just built on and over a usgi fiberglass stock.
I have taken on the project of producing canadian made stocks for the m14.
I have not registered as a dealer here yet so my comments must be limited, but canadian made fiberglass stocks will eventually be availlable without the cost and hassle of having to import from the u.s. . Otokiak can tell ya what his mcmillan cost him to get here...... very nice stock ;) but the average guy can't afford to dump a grand for a rifle stock.

a few of my prototypes are out there in the hands of fellow cgn'ers being "field tested" so to speak. feedback has been excellent. Once i iron out the manufacturing process , I will be listing as a dealer here and only advertising through CGN. Till then, I welcome questions by p.m.

So - here's a question. What is the common length that people generally shorten the barrel to? And is it still 'non-restricted'?

I didn't notice much any front-heaviness when I swapped on my USGI stock. As long as the cleaning kit, tools, butt plate, and oiler bottle are in place, it should be fine.

Then again, I am 6'3, so your mileage may vary.
 
How do I get in touch with 'Ellwoods epps' for the barrell shortening. Or does anyone know someone local to Calgary that would be able to do this?

For sure. I am going to have to ge a WIDE-assed sling pad for her.

You need to be a big guy to hunt with this thing, unless you are going to sit in a blind or tree stand all day. USGI or properly dressed chu wood are better for hunting for most.
 
i should clarify.... a sniper would love "fielding" this stock..... average joe..... maybe not so much ;)

Laz had one for sale.... he kept bringin it to all the wet coast m14 clinics..... teasing me.... I almost bought it.... of all the stocks.... i like the "idea" of my rifle in the jae, but as a "field" rifle.... the stock just wasn't for me. I plan to take her hunting as well as target shootin so went with a faster lighter design in pistol grip fiberglass with bipod rail and collapsable butstock. These JAE stocks are extremely detailed, and thier receiver tab locking units are probably the most inovative approach to rock solid bedding of the m14 platform. You will be very pleased with one should you choose to go that route, they are high end quality that's for sure.
