Wild game butcher Edmonton area

Kind of last minute here..,

I always do my own butchering...BUT I am headed out to Alberta to do an elk hunt (cull) at Base Suffield. We have two cow elk tags, and if we connect we will only likely be able to quarter the animal(s) before the meat is frozen.

So is there a butcher in the Edmonton area (especially St Albert) who can take frozen elk quarters and butcher them?

There is an Outdoors Alberta forum or something there about in name and this hunt is a popular topic over there…
Some are members there and cross post here on CGN as well.

Why you would be looking for a butcher in St. Albert (5 hours) away from Suffield is beyond me. But D’arcy meat market is in St. Albert had a few deer done by them years ago with I lived in the city. Keep in mind temps have been above 0 for a week now. Central Alberta has lost 16in of snow. The suffeild area is more south and winters are easyer and milder in that part of Alberta. My guess is you would have lots of time to do what you want with the game befor it freezes.
 
Grassy Lane meats just outside of New Sarepta, just a little east of Edmonton or Bruderheim Butcher, 780-796-3040 Andrea, she and her husband closed their store front but still do custom butchering. They were trying to sell so they might be gone although they were still operational in November. I’ve used both, Grassy Lane, 780-941-3944 would be my first choice. Phone ahead to both of them. Hope this helps.

My host lives in St Albert and he got drawn for the elk tags. So we are driving from there to Suffield for the hunt, then back to St Albert. I am not an AB resident, so cannot hunt or carry a firearm, but I am legally allowed to be a "helper."

Yes, if we are successful and if the meat doesn't freeze before we get back to St Albert, I could for sure butcher it myself.

I did that hunt a few years ago, it’s different let’s just call it that. Never applied for it again after that first time. Good luck! I think everyone should do it once.

Thanks again! Yes I know that it is a cull because of the herd size. And that 140 hunters and their helpers have a "mass start" each day to drive out onto the range in search of elk. Could be fairly crowded............. :rolleyes:

Once you find the elk make sure you put on your bulletproof vests and helmet befor you get out of the truck or at least stay low. It’s like being in a war zone

Well, I am back home again after an interesting experience at Suffield. As it turned out, my hunting partner shot two antlerless elk within about a minute as a herd of about 50 thundered past us. And we did not get caught in the ensuing crossfire. :oops: That was day 2 of a scheduled 3 day hunt so we went back a day early and thereby had time to butcher the elk ourselves.

Interesting side note: I was struck by how small the cuts were on the elk. The top round, bottom round, top sirloin, etc etc were all about the same size as I would get off a good size whitetail deer.

Long ago, I was a VERY satisfied customer of Coronado Meats, just north of Edmonton. I see that they are still active on their website, dunno if the guy running it now is a descendant of the fella that I used to deal with, or the same guy. I drove my moose down from Cold lake to have him cut it, long back...

Was most impressed, when I saw him refuse to accept a dirty carcass, as he was not willing to have that hanging in his cooler.

The guy was Swiss, IIRC, and made about the most badass hot spicy sausages that looked a little like a Jaeagermeister sausage except red and hot. Damn... My mouth is watering, just thinking bout them! LOL!

Victoria Fancy Sausage in Edmonton, great staff. Really good smokies etc if you’re looking for a treat. The biggest thing for me is getting back MY animal. You can trust them. I do my own now.

Yeah. One of the Ontario guys that drove out to the moose camp I was invited to by a great friend, insisted on using them. That was AFTER I was pretty much a neighbor, and a regular customer.

Thought it was pretty funny, as my wife kept a horse at the boarding stable there while we lived in the area.

LOL! What could be a better combo of businesses, besides keeping a Horse Boarding Stable, and a really good Butcher Shop, on the same premises? Easy disposal! ,<chuckle>

I seem to recall a Comedian commenting that he didn't need to write Comedy, because, as he stated it "this sh!t writes itself!". :p

But, man, IIRC, he called it Hungarian Sausage, was killer stuff!
