I have a basic reloading set up and limited knowledge on the more intricate details of rifle reloading. How important is it to add a chronograph? They're not overly expensive, but also not cheap. Just wondering how far down the list it would be compared to spending some extra time and $ shooting, and figuring out the ballistics with paper and a calculator.

Depends on the type of shooting you're doing. If you're just doing loads for plinking at 1-200 yards, I don't see a chronograph as a necessity. If you're reloading for longer ranges or for competitions (where power factor is a rule) then it becomes much more important

Well I really like my chronograph and I don’t shoot for competition but I find it really help getting the right load and kind of knowing where you’re at in terms of pressure. Also for hunting it is nice to know your ftlbs so you can choose the right bullets… I mean it ain’t indispensable but it is useful!

Kind of the thoughts I'm having. Just another tool in the belt and probably if/when I decide to get one, it'll fall into the can't live without category. Maybe next years purchase.

I thought it wasn't that big of a deal untill I got one and started realizing how incomplete my reloading was without it. A few of the loads I thought were "fast" weren't and needed more testing and higher charges. Especially if shooting monos.
Your just guessing without one.
I started with a caldwell and now have a Garmin.
The Garmin is f uckin awesome

Like any tool, it depends what you want out of it.

+1
I’ve only been reloading for a year and went through alot of components dialing in loads before I had access to one , now I’m developing quicker and when you know the speed you can put it in a ballistic calculator for your drops , as well as checking any factory ammo as it will vary from the box stats from barrel to barrel so I can put that in a ballistic calculator as well.
Edit: the +1 was for gatehouse’s post the one under added whist I was typing, but it did give me a chuckle so +1 for reloading in the dark too! Heheh

Not a bad thing to have, there are lots of the older sky-screen types on the new and used market, can be bought for a fraction of the price you would pay for Garmin or other similar modern chrono's.

What I like about my Labradar LX is that it fires a bunch of doppler shots within the first 25 yards to get a true deceleration profile of your bullet.
That way you get an actual ballistic coefficient of your (bore imprinted) bullet after leaving the muzzle.
No theoretics. Real measured deal.

Of course, it back calculates the velocities from 5 to 25 yards to extrapolate your actual muzzle velocity at the muzzle.
The benefit of a Magnetospeed without pulling your POI.

Gotta luv it!
