Picked up a new to me Model 70 308 recently, stripped the stock and refinished with antique oil, now I need a new sling. Was thinking of getting a nice leather one made, but I have several nylon/neoprene ones already. What's everyone using on there wood stocked rifles for hunting. 20260219_123705.jpg

I use a proper 1 1/4 inch loop shooting sling on mine as it doubles as a shooting aid as well as a carry strap. I hate bipods for hunting so the shooting sling is the next best thing.

I use a home made poly-cotton web sling. Very simple and a classic look. I make one for every gun in the safe.

edit: USGI slings are easy to make from the same material, you just have to find the hardware

I like Rhodesian slings or Ching slings depending on what guy you ask for the name . Stabilizes the shooting frame in many positions. But even a nice standard leather strap is fine. No polyester or plastic but that’s a personal preference. Would love to get a nice horsehair one made but they’re $500+

I use a sling I designed and make myself!
I made a bunch of different one before I came up with that combination of high quality veg tan leather and nylon webbing.

How do you make your bar tacks? My machine will pile up after only a couple passes.

I have a 1907 on one rifle, but my go to is a simple 1" leather sling. Most of my hunting is still hunting/stalking, so the rifles are in my hands more than on my shoulder

On my Merkel k5 that’s what I made, simple simple and light.

I use a Quake Claw sling. I've tried a few options and of the ones I've tried this was the one that is least likely to slip off my shoulder when I'm also carrying a large pack.

Nice rifle
I ran a 1907 for a bit on my model 70 which is great for shooting positional, not so great for carry. Ended up with a pretty cheap neoprene/elastic/webbing deal that was comfortable for carry and no help at all shooting positional.
Most of my slings now are “scout” style now but not the 3 point attach kind…
Wide nylon webbing with arm loop and quick length adjust.

That rifle is calling for classic leather though

I like a sling but I hate when I'm carrying a rifle and have a sling flopping around every which way and getting caught on branches, these are the only ones I use, I keep them taught during use then just lengthen them when I want to throw it over my shoulder. Only downfall I can see is if you want an ultra light rig these do weight about 8oz

I've just been using the neoprene cabelas slings.
Cheap and comfortable.
On my older rifles I try and keep the original leather slings. They just look classy and are comfortable also.

I use a Kifaru Gun Bearer with a backpack,
Those are pretty slick. I was too cheap/poor to buy one so made my own from the straps on an old backpack. Works pretty well, but unless I'm packing into the bush I don't seem to use it much. Should probably revisit it...

synthetic padded slings on all my hunting rifles. Need to be easy to carry slung for hours at a time walking or on a quad.

except the truck gun, no sling on that one, you don't want to get snagged up bailing out of the truck. :)
