Ruger American Ranch 5.56 Bolt Won’t Lock — Need Help Diagnosing

I contacted Ruger about this issue and was referred to the Gravel Agency in Quebec for inspection. I shipped the firearm to them, expecting what I thought would be a straightforward fix. Instead, I received the following response:
After inspection and consultation with Ruger, a no‑charge repair has been denied. The factory team does not believe the chamber damage to be caused from the factory process.
Please note, the barrel is too damaged to attempt repair and is no longer available. We can destroy the firearm on site, or we can return it to you as is, but we will need to have a waiver signed.”**
According to Gravel, the barrel is damaged beyond repair. This came as a surprise because:

  • I’ve never used any reloaded ammo in this rifle.
  • I’ve owned it for about three years.
  • It’s been fired maybe once a year, always with American Eagle 5.56 factory ammunition.
  • What I thought was a simple issue apparently turned into a “damaged barrel” diagnosis.
I’m trying to understand how a lightly used rifle, fed only factory ammo, ends up with chamber damage severe enough that Ruger won’t repair it and the barrel is considered non‑serviceable.

Has anyone here had a similar experience with Ruger or Gravel Agency?

Does this kind of damage make sense given the usage?

And what would you do in my situation—have it destroyed or get it returned?

Any insight would be appreciated.

This does not make sense that the barrel is stopping the bolt from closing. I have built a few rifles from these actions and have not seen any way the barrel would affect the bolt unless it was loosened and re-tightened in a different location changing the head space

Definitely get it back, did you take before pictures, curious if it was damaged there.
If you don't want it, I'd pay shipping to have it sent to me.

total bull hooey on Gravel's part!
If the danged thing was working BEFORE it was stored, then it has nothing to do with the chamber at all.
Get the danged rifle back and give it to someone who is competent enough to disassemble the bolt and put it back together, that is all that is wrong with it!

Gravel Agency used to be a great place to deal with.....:)

Unfortunately their so-called customer service has gone for a sh!t. Along with WOKE attitudes. DO NOT SEND ANYTHING TO THESE CLOWNS!......:(

Get your rifle back and have it checked by a reputable gunsmith. You may need to re-barrel your firearm if it is no longer in a safe firing condition.

If you don't know a good gunsmith, Josh Salzmann in Creston from Accurate Rifle Co is an excellent start. 250-254-0489

Gravel has really crashed into oblivion......:( I'm not sure what happened there?.......:(

The ####### is gun-post without the hyphen, I forgot how afraid Gunnutz is of the word GUN-POST........ FFS.......:(

I dealt with warranty issues through Gravel Agency before. The best advice I have is to loop in Ruger International. They will actually try to help. Gravel agency is fine to deal with for paperwork. But their gunsmithing seemed to be very questionable based on my experiences. You need to get the gun back and post pictures.

Edit: Should anyone have to send something to Gravel Agency, take pictures of EVERYTHING you send them and document everything.

Sounds like a sh!tty deal for the OP. I am convinced it is a bolt issue. Im gonna have a look at mine tonight to see how something like this could happen.
The bolt was probably in the fired position, and now with all the messing about it may be jammed up and unable to return to the cocked position.

As soon as I seen Gravel Agencies I knew this was gonna be a gong show. I had an issue with a REM 700 and was advised to use them. Never again will I ever use them , they are a totally incompetent bunch of idiots.
