There was a post around that there were rumors of Savage bringing back the M99.
Wheather or not that is possible or not, it is fun to think about it and theorize.
Just imagine and pipe dream a bit if you will and what if....

What cartridges would you like to see a reserected 99 chambered in??? Any special feachers or configurations you would like to see???

I'd like to see a "classic" model in the "classic" savage cartridges. 250/3000, . 300.

.308 would be a natural, 7mm08 would be cool or .284 win. I'd rather see a .260 rem than a .243 win. How about a 338 Federal?

Rear lockup Never handle the pressure of a wsm

You're assuming that it will be the same as the old model.

.308 and .260 pressures run up to 60,000psi.
.300 and .325 wsm pressures run up to 63,000psi

I really don't see much of a difference. Who says you can't run a .325wsm at 60,000psi?

.308 165 GR. HDY SP IMR IMR 4064 .308" 2.750" MIN 42.0 2554 47,700 PSI MAX 46.3C 2767 59,700 PSI

.325 wsm 195 GR. HDY SP Hodgdon H414 0.323" 2.855" MIN 61.0 2722 54,500 PSI MAX 64.5 2847 61,800 PSI

Even if they did bring back the 99, I doubt that there would be a regular run of the old calibers. The 250 and 300 are nostalgic as long as you can't buy one new, but in the long run those calibers would be slow sellers.

Imagine a 99 in 270 or 300 WSM. Maybe Gatehouse could get one in 375Rewger. :slap:

The savage 99 is an exceptionally strong levergun, rear lock up or not. With a little tinkering it could handle a lot of short action cartridges.
Me, 358, 308, 38-55, 30-30, 7mm-08, 284.
And if it can be done, the 348 would be a blast.

I have only seen 6 284s in 99s and everyone had headspace problems. As much as I love 99 Savages they are a weak action prone to stretching and headspace problems with high pressure rounds. And they got worse when you cut out the bottom for a removable mag.

And I would love one in 260 but I don't want to download that caliber.
A scaled down model in 223 would be perfect.

Mine had some spring too, but, steels have changed.
Spring doesn't always translate to weak. It does translate to problems for reloaders, and brass stretch.
For example, the SMLE is widely regarded as a "weak' action. But when Ackley tested it, he found it much stronger than he expected. The same was true for the '94 Winchester.
Remember he was looking to blow up the action, not to just stretch brass.
The Savage 99 IS a strong lever action (of the traditional type). If you thought I was comparing it to a bolt, I wasn't.
Take the action apart and look at it. It's very well thought out.

Just to be an ass, but honest.

I think the 99's are the fugliest uncomfortable guns I have ever seen, shot or owned.

Yuk !!!!

What exactly is it that you guys like about them?

So you jumped in the thread just to give us your view on them? So tell me, what models or make you like so I can crash the thread and tell everyone what a piece of crap they are.

That's the point Bob I have repaired quite a few also resurected a few from the parts bin.It is an excellent action but I don't think It will handle wissum and short wissum pressures. As I said the 284s I handled all had problems. In fact Maddog got one of them.I seem to remember talk on the Savage forums about another caliber that developed head space issue too but memory fails .Maybe Joe can remember.Don't ask Les
aka Violater as he's full of it when it comes to 99s.

No. I said I don't like them. It seems that many do, so I eneded with the question, What is it that you like about them?
I find them bulky, akward and not real nice looking.
So what is that you appreciate?

I hopped in on the thread cause I had one given to me in 30 30. Couldn't sell it and I gave it away myself, just for lack of use.

PS

I hated scotch for many yeras of my life as well, not now though.
perhaps the 99 will someday grow on me, but I doubt it.
