What if Savage brought back the M99??

PS

I hated scotch for many yeras of my life as well, not now though.

Damn, now thats one thing I could never see myself ever liking but who knows.

I've got to many reasons for liking the 99. One: I love all the old Savage guns, not just the 99's. Two: I like the history and what the old rifles can be traced back to way back at the start of the century. Three: I can get some really nice groups with them and they take every big game animal I can point it at here in my province.;)

I call BS
I have only seen 6 284s in 99s and everyone had headspace problems. As much as I love 99 Savages they are a weak action prone to stretching and headspace problems with high pressure rounds. And they got worse when you cut out the bottom for a removable mag.

And I would love one in 260 but I don't want to download that caliber.
A scaled down model in 223 would be perfect.

Rich

I had a 99c in .284, it was just fine thanks.

I wouldn't buy one unless they brought back the rotary mag as well. If they did that... the 308 family would probably be best for sales though I personally like the 300 best.

If Savage brings back the 99, I hope they keep it's best features, improve the weaknesses, and keep the cost reasonable.

As to cartridge, I would like to see something in .338 - the .338 Federal might be a good one if the improved 99 can handle 62,000 PSI safely.

That's the point Bob I have repaired quite a few also resurected a few from the parts bin.It is an excellent action but I don't think It will handle wissum and short wissum pressures. As I said the 284s I handled all had problems. In fact Maddog got one of them.I seem to remember talk on the Savage forums about another caliber that developed head space issue too but memory fails .Maybe Joe can remember.Don't ask Les
aka Violater as he's full of it when it comes to 99s.

I have not been over there for quite a while, however. The 99 like other lever guns has issues with brass stretch due to the rear lockup. It's not a strength issue, just the fact that there are more surfaces at play and more slack to take up.
You might be surprised by the WSSMs. They don't have the bolt thrust of the more tapered designs. Hard to say without trying it though.
right now I don't have a 99 in my collection, (Maddog is pulling out his hair) so I can't even say if they'd fit. The 348, if the 99 would accommodate the rim, would be the one I'd wonder about bolt thrust wise.

Rich, it was the 22-250. Supposedly the worst for the head space issue but I haven't run into one yet that had a problem.

284 on the other hand is a pain in the arse. At least mine is as you still remember I see. What my smith wants to do is for me to get a 284 reamer and he wants to set the barrel back another thread and redo the spacing. I guess thats the route I'll have to go but I'd like to try a new bolt first though cause I've got a strange feeling it's just not locking up right.

Joe
The fella that owned yours for 30yrs or so handloaded everything .Whether it was too hot I don't know. But I do know that neck of the woods and those old boys only sell a gun when they can't get it to work anymore.

Now I'm liking this idea even better than the .358 Win :) Still want to see a Mini 99 in .223 though (.22 Hornet wouldn't hurt either ;))

How about a historical touch? I have a picture taken many years ago of a lady in the B.C. interior who used a 22 Savage Hi-Power to hunt Grizzly. If anyone is interested in posting it for me:redface:, PM me your e-mail address.

Here you go JP, awesome photo :D

Always potential for every gun, it just depends on how much money you wanna spend on it and right now I don't wanna spend any money on it!!!!

You may have to anneal before you try this.
You can try and pull the shoulder forward until the brass won't chamber. Then set the die down so it just touches the shoulder.Adjust it down a little at a time until a crush fit is felt in the chamber.Reload it and fireform . If it works lock the ring on the die and leave it set there.

I wish you lived closer as I would like to see if this works. If you can't figure it out mail the sucker with dies and 5 pcs of brass and I will do it.John Y is closer and he will know what I am talking about.

Rich,
You don't need to pull the shoulder forward--run a 30 cal expander ball through the neck and then gradually run it into the 284 die until you can just close the lever--they load with an 80% or so load of reasonably fast powder--like 4895 or 3031--should fireform the case to the chamber--then neck size or if chambers hard just barely touch the shoulder with the sizing die.

I had to do this with one of my .35 whelens--early runs of Remington brass were incorrectly formed at the shoulder--if you just loaded them the cases would separate after the 2nd loading.

Regards, Jim.

ps, Joe--maybe I am glad you snuck that one out. :)

Ya, no doubt, forgot I grabbed that one from under you.

Rich, I got no use for it right now, I'll send you the gun, dies, base, and a box of shells if you wanna tinker. Hell keep it for a year and shoot something with it.

Hell Yes, I'm just around the corner Joe, why don't you stop over for a beer? :D
Fire forming is a top notch idea. After that, a partial full length resizing should get you shooting. (Don't push the shoulder back)
