One Cal - Multiple Rifles

This was the original post/conversation that was had. Part of the confusion was I referenced Cal instead of Cartridge and I guess it threw people off.

So as an example, One .308 (or whatever) in multiple setups, say 20”, 22” and 24” configurations.
Not to be night picking, but .308 is still not a chambering/cartridge but still a caliber, 308 Winchester
308 Norma mag, 300 win mag, 30 nosler etc those are cartridges or for me I like chambering better as a term but that is just me, and they are all .308 or 30 cal.

I believe that I owned 3, maybe 4 30-06's my entire life. I currently have dominion with one, but why 4, 5 or six?
Well one was my dad browning bar, the other was the first rifle I bought after I moved to the Yukon 30 years ago it became my wife’s rifle, one is a nice husqvarna 1640 featherweight with adjustable comb, and the last one is a Merkel k5 that I bought cause I wanted a single shot rifle after selling all my Ruger no 1 to finance my Bradshaw rotary action that turned out to be a mistake…. I’m trying to sell the Ruger m77 mkII so far no one wants it even after dropping the price considerably so at some point one think he better to just keep it! Oh and the one on its way wasn’t supposed to be a 30-06 but that’s what it ended up becoming. 🙄🫣🤷🏼‍♂️

Cheers I know what your saying but everyone is having a tough time with you calling a caliber a cartridge. I did too until I asked you and you responded. They are not the same thing... Saying .308 or whatever is only defining a caliber. A cartridge would be a 308 Winchester or other actual cartridge type. When you make vague definitions that are incorrect to what you mean, you don't get the reply that is relevant to your question.
My original reply to this thread is completely irrelevant due to my misunderstanding that your definition of a cartridge is the same as a bullet diameter. Sorry I don't mean to sound harsh. I still like the premise of your question.. Like the ultimate rifle cartridge for your needs. I hunt animals that are not similar in size so for me, no there is not a single cartridge type.
I do own rifles that are the same cartridge.. but I reload specific to each chamber.. So if you shoot factory ammo it's possible or if you resize to spec. it can work. But for my process It won't. Cheers

I'm still suprised no one has grabbed that yet..Like REALLY suprised

I’ve been considering a secondary/backup to my ‘06 lately as well.

Then again, I’ve also been looking at going back to 7mmRM or 300Win for a longer range setup. Wait, hold that thought…I’d like to add another Rem Mtn in there, Model Seven at some point, I’m liking the M77 UL I got recently so another Ruger possibly? and maybe I should finally give the 6.5Needmore an honest go instead of trashing it since it’s inception (?)..

No worries, the post was meant to see the different replies or opinions, get people to think and see if there was some legitimacy behind for or against it.

As stated previously I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer as it’s based on individual needs.

Jeez, I bring 8 different rifles/cartridges when I go gopher shooting. Let alone all the other disciplines one can get involved in. Ya never know what target will present itself or at what distance. Maybe I’m walking a fence line, maybe its close in work with the 22LR, maybe it’s an 800 yard poke. Maybe an unlucky bagger needs to dispatched at 475 yards in a 20 mph crosswind. One needs to be prepared! What I love most about the shooting sports is the wide variety of options to keep my ocd brain entertained. One cartridge or caliber? No thanks. Too boring and routine.

Well, I have a number of .22s, set up for different things.

I have three rifles in 6.5 x 55; two for nostalgia and fun, M96, M38 in original configuration, and a Zastava M70 sporting rifle I bought new for fun and some varmint hunting too.

Not to be "night picking" either, but "chambering" is a verb, the act of feeding a cartridge into a chamber, or the act of cutting a chamber into a barrel for a "cartridge."
Cartridge is a noun, the thing you feed into the chamber when you are "chambering." 😃

Thanks, I blame it on my poor English. 🤓

Tall order which is a worse compromise than all season tires. But if a guy is absolutely resigned to one cartridge (or one rifle) it can only be the 270 Winchester. It will take all NA big game, but though it is exceedingly large for varmints, still fits under the caliber constraints some jurisdictions impose. Rifle options? If only one rifle, a good bolt action. Multiple rifles? brush - a pump action, semi or bolt carbine. Varmints/target - definitely an accurate, longer barrel and heavier bolt action. Open country big game: an accurate bolt action with 22-24" barrel.

FTR - what an odd point to debate... I'd feel naked being limited to one cartridge. And since the criteria includes multiple platforms, why wouldn't the chambering be different in each one? Here's minimum of what a world hunter would need: 22LR, 270w and 375H&H. Ideally this would be 22LR, 222, 250 Savage, 7mm-08, 30-06, 338 winmag and 416 Rigby. That covers everything on the planet.
