Bear Protection Shotgun

Try Federal truball deep penetrators for lower recoil but good penetration. Actual weight is almost 500 grains and they're made of a hard alloy so don't deform much. Or better yet, Challenger magnum 2 3/4" slugs. Same weight and they are the Best penetrators of any slug I've used including Brennekes. 1,450 fps out of a 15" barrel.

If I was going to get a shotgun to carry for bear defense these days it would be this one. I would attach a light and a red dot to it.

My favourite gun by far for camping, hunting, hiking. Haven't been able to source the federal deep pen slugs so I'm running the rio brenneke for now

I'd test the Challengers for sure. I think they're junk.

I've shot them into logs and the go deep. They deform a bit but they don't expand, being made of harder lead alloy. Nearly 100% weight rentention. The expanded projectile pictured on the box must have been shot into a concrete wall!

I've compared them to .45 colt 360 grain hard casts out of a rifle (Ruger only loads) and they penetrate almost as deep. I think velocity on those 360s was in the 1300fps range, so not far off from the old 45-70 loads.

They use a slug made by Gualandi, also sold as a component by ballistic products under the name "DGS slug" if I recall correctly. They have a 1 3/8 ounce version as a component too, that would be a great dangerous game slug, provided it uses the same hard alloy.

Thing is up here if I had to bring a shotgun when I go where there is bears I would have a gun with me as soon as I leave the house, and I can’t see my self carrying a shotgun while bucking, running or mountain biking hahaha. I think people are paranoid about bears. 30years in bear country and never had a problem my self, I know of a few unlucky people that can’t say the same, but those incident would have had the same outcome guns or no guns, the bears came out of nowhere so no time to even react.

My 3 handguns for Alaska
Ruger Red Hawk 44 Mag 4.2” ( 1998-2008)
Glock 20 in 10mm (2009-2022)
Glock 21 in (setup for 45 Super) Favorite ( 2023 to present)
I have and shoot the G21 very well. Aside from a 22# recoil spring assembly, are there any other things that should be done before it digests .45 Super?

Yes I have done 3 modifications to my Glock 21 for 45 super

KKM Barrel 4.6”
22/24 pound recoil spring
Wolff 10% Extra Power Mag Springs

My 45 Super Load
13.0 of AA9
WW 45 ACP Brass
CCI 350 Mag Primers
250gr Rim Rock TS RNFP
1.200”
Lee Factory Crimp
1098 FPS

My handload for a couple years now for 45 super.
Longshot Powder was excellent in 45 super as well as 10mm also ! Both NDZ 22 and 24 pound springs work well I couldn’t tell a difference in either weights but I left the 24lb in it for 45 Super.

Here we have people killed every year by Bear and Moose. On the job I used rubber slugs in 870 for hazing bears shooting them on the rump most of the time. The black bears were more aggressive than the Grizzly and stubborn.
Up here incident or should I say fatal incident are really rare, they do happen but not every year and not even every five years.
One of them a lady and her husband a grizzly got into there cabin they managed to get out and the grizzly followed and attacked the woman, the man took his rifle or shotgun(don’t recall which it was) shot the bear, the lady was dead, they found out at the autopsy that the husband had shot her as well as the bear… fvck!!
Anyway of course I ain’t against gun lol but I won’t be taking one every time I go out, actually I don’t know anyone that does(I’m sur there is some). Bear spray, bear bangers have worked just fine for bears that you see. And for the one that you don’t see you won’t have time to do anything anyway… most of the time.

One rifle that I often have while camping is a Rossi ranch hand in 44 magnum, with a full stock added.
I know in the USA you would need the tax stamp on it for a sbr, but here in Canada it is just a rifle.

Very similar where the man left his wife on top of the cabin roof and went near by neighbors for a gun when he returned the black bear had climbed up and got on the roof and the woman was dead. They killed the bear. Never ever be in the bush without a gun !

Tourist is our biggest problem and a lot of foreign tourist with bears and taking pictures to close and hiking trails.
I could tell you stories all day about people getting killed by moose and bear in Alaska. Even a woman was attacked by a pack of wolves walking to her mailbox Candice Berner.

Last year was a crazy year for bear attacks across the world.
25 fatal bear attacks in Japan.
Ammoland.com has a good list of bear attacks worldwide.
And on YouTube Chukes outdoors does a video eveey Friday going over the precious weeks bear attacks.

Yes they are still incredibly rare, but they do happen
