What AR should I buy?

Congrats on the escape! I do believe the flood of gunnies headed south hasn't even begun...

But on the AR front, my goodness I don't know what I would go with... Probably Daniel Defense...
I like DD, but I've heard their QC has dropped, and the price point has gone up. Essentially, riding the wave from their SF contract.

Check out “school of the American rifle” on YouTube. Wealth of knowledge. I’d probably get a 14.5” geissele super duty to start or their Urgi.

My work visa just got approved, and I'll be moving to Texas in the next few months. I want to start saving up for my next purchase, which will be an AR, when I'm considered a resident (roughly 3 months after I move).

What would you get and why? (I want to keep the price point to around $2500 USD, but I'm willing to spend more if there's justification.)

Not looking for a DMR-type rifle - something with a 14.5" barrel and a full-length rail. The only aftermarket parts I want to install are a Giessle trigger group. Not sure if I can qualify for a suppressor/moderator as a resident... So let's leave that off the table (for now)

I've made contact with an FFL in the city I'm moving to, so I should be able to access any make/model.

Don't hate the player... Let's try to make this fun!
Are you on a TN Visa...? From what i recall, not all Visa's allow you to purchase a firearm... although state "nuances" do apply.

Having said that.. i have... 5 or six... (damn things are like chips) Palmetto State Armory Rifles, either Lower+Upper combos or ground up builds using their lowers. Zero problems.. (save for 1 gas block that worked loose (my fault)) and zero failures over 1000's of rounds. Are their better rifles out there...yeah... but for the price, the PSA is really the "everyman (women too, my fiance's rifle is also PSA)" rifle.

Also... buy handguns... lots of handguns...

Pics for attention.

My visa allows me to live in the US on a full-time basis. I don't have to play the game of leaving and returning every few months.

Under state law, I have to be a "resident" before I can purchase firearms. So a TX DL is required. It takes a few months of bills to establish residency, so the AR won't be the first thing I get. Gotta pay some bills for the move...

Once I'm a resident, I can begin importing my handguns. I was going to post "what handgun should I buy" in the pistol section, but I'm only going to get one - a Glock G19 Gen 6 with an ACRO sight. I'd also consider adding a S&W 642 wheelgun for "pocket" carry. But for the most part, I don't need any more handguns. I'll import what I can and sell them in the US - I've made a connection with someone who has an FFL, so they can help me out. I'll keep my 1911s and sell the rest at a discount... I've got an STI Edge in .40 - round count of about 200 - that's still worth a few dollars, even in the US. Can't sell it here...

Congrats on the move. Take all of the following with a grain of salt...

If you insist on spending up to your $2500 budget get a JP.....BUT.... for less than $1000 you can build yourself a nice rifle. There are literally thousands of manufacturers out there with quality parts.

As for the G19, that's like going to Ben & Jerry's and getting a single scoop of vanilla ice cream in a bowl. Again, so much is available. It all depends on intended use.

It's been a number of years, but I imported my firearms myself when I moved to AZ. A little bit of paperwork but didn't cost me anything. I don't know if that's still possible. Don't be surprised if the ATF disallows anything - they're funny like that. They wouldn't allow my Colt flat-top HBAR Sporter Competition because it doesn't have any 'sporting or competitive use in the USA' The truth is that it was an evil pre-ban gun.

Just my opinion but the Edge in 40 was a great IPSC gun.... 15-20 years ago. I don't see a lot of competitors shooting 40 anymore. It might still be worth a couple of dollars.

Get a Texas CCW. It's not needed but there are benefits - reciprocity with 30+ states, and it bypasses the NICS background check for new purchases. It may allow carry in some places where carry is not allowed.

I expect to take a bath on the sale of the handguns, but there's no helping that. Better to get something for them rather than the nothing I'd get in Canada. I'm relatively young (at least that's what I tell myself), but I can't pass them on to my kids when I leave this world. If I get 50-75 cents on the dollar, that's better than nothing. Some stuff I won't sell and might even use for carry. I've got an H&K P7 that's quite compact, so I plan to bring that down with me and carry it. I like the Edge, but I won't shoot it, so it's better to sell that and use the funds for the AR program. I've got a couple of STI GP6s that are relatively new and seem to have a bit of a following, so I might even break even. I have a Baretta Elite II that I'll definitely sell - it has a low round count (200-ish), and those are prized by collectors.

My H&K P7 is one of two in my EDC rotation. The other is an IWI Masada Slim Elite in an OWB kydex holster. OWB is better on my motorcycle. The Milt Sparks VM2 is an awesome IWB leather holster for the P7

"I've been thinking about moving down to Texas. Been thinking about setting myself free. Yea, I'm thinking about moving down to Texas.
So I can live around people who think like me".
Freedom Creep 2025.

BCM upper. Then a quality lower of your choice. I'm envious.
