Ticks this spring!!

Lyme disease gets very little attention for both humans and pets in Canada. Not sure why that is.

Depends. Here they do. Both Vets have tick tally charts with number of ticks found and how many tested positive. From pets they seen in their clinic. Even break it down to each month.
 
Guy I work with on the side got that newish virus?condition?

That causes a meat allergy from a tick bite.
 
They're usually bad this time of year in crowsnest pass ab, no signs yet. Have been giving my malamute something called bravecto for years and he hasn't shown any side effects. Idea is the tick bites him then falls off, haven't read into it, just took the vet at her word. They would otherwise bury themselves in his fur and get a free ride into the house. Nasty little things.

Think thats the same stuff I bought today. 1 big chewy pill for $80!! Good for 3 months. Bought 1 for our Frenchie and 1 for our Mountain Bernese. Almost the same price but a way smaller pill. Could have got a years supply for the Frenchie and got her the big pill. Vets!!

Sorry Hitzy, I tried to reply to the fat ugly blood engorged tick.
It would have been much funnier with the fat tick pic.
I was referring to the fat engorged tick as he ate Natalie.
Of course, now that I have had to explain it it’s not that funny! LOL
I’m not sure why the fat tick picture wouldn’t show…:)

Yeah, I use Ultra Shield on my outdoor coveralls and inside/outside the shaft of my rubber boots. One good application is good for the season, and the stuff works.

I buy that same bottle, 950ml, at my local farm supply store. $41 for the spray bottle, or $35 if you just buy the refill and use your old spray top.
 
I treated my clothes with Sawyer or Ultra Shield before coming down to Barrie area for turkey hunting. I haven't found any on me so far but my hunt partners with untreated clothing have had deer ticks on them.

Ritchie's Feed Store in Elmvale has the big refill jugs $100 with tax

Sunday I had a buddy show up at my place with a female blacklegged tick in a sandwich bag that his wife pulled off his shoulder...

He said he hadn't even been off the trail when he went for a walk & just couldn't understand how he got one on him...

I told him he could walk across the lawn & pick one up... Anyhow...

geneticks.ca is where I advised him to send the tick to see if it was positive for Lyme & go from there...
 
As much as I despise those little vermin, I have to admit that I owe my life to a tick. I recently contracted something called "anaplasmosis" from a tick bite, similar to Lyme disease but apparently with worse consequences. After a month's illness, my wife finally convinced me to go to the hospital. To make a long story short, part of the diagnostic regime they subjected me to was an abdominal ultrasound due to some abnormal findings from my blood tests. As a result of the ultrasound, they discovered a "mass" attached to my left kidney which turned out to be cancer. No pain, no symptoms, no nothing, so if not for that fortuitous tick bite I'd have been completely unaware of the cancer until it had grown to the point of causing symptoms. The cancer (and the kidney) were removed a few weeks later and I am now pretty much recovered. Though I despise tattoos almost as much as I despise ticks, I'm seriously thinking of getting a tiny tick tattoo where it bit me on my arm to pay homage to that little bugger who saved my life.

Last year when I had one stuck in my shoulder area, my doc told me not to bother with sending the tick for test because it takes to long for the results.

She said for the antibiotic to work at its fullest against lime, it has to be taken within 72 hrs if memory serves me right.

She said, even if it is not positive for lime, it wont harm you, but by the time the results come back from the lab and it is positive, too much time has passed for the meds to fully work.
