My in-laws live in Brantford ON area and have been finding ticks on their dog since March, SW Ontario up to Hamilton seems to be a hot spot.
Just a message for anyone with dogs that are of a herding breed, to keep an eye on their dogs if they are taking tick medication. Our 5 year old border collie has the MDR1 gene and developed seizure like symptoms from the meds and had to be taken off them. Vets rarely acknowledge this issue with certain breeds until the symptoms appear.
From the interwebs: The MDR1 (multidrug resistance 1) gene mutation is a genetic defect common in herding dogs (roughly 70–75% of Collies) that causes sensitivity to certain medications. This mutation prevents the production of P-glycoprotein, allowing drugs to accumulate in the brain and cause severe neurotoxicity. Affected dogs may react to ivermectin, loperamide (Imodium), and anesthesia.
