thanks for the advice. i think i will go with the 300 win mag.
being a lefty i have a few less choices.
i am leaning toward tikka t3 varmint stainless and browning a bolt II. i like the way they both felt at the gunshop this past weekend.
i am probably going with the tikka t3 varmint stainless.

am i correct in thinking that because it is a heavier rifle, 8lbs, with an approx 24" heavy barrel that this could reduce muzzle jump and handle recoil of a 300wm a bit better? or am i totally out to lunch. Thanks again guys

i am a lefty who has been shooting a right handed rifle for too long. i have recently sold my 30.06 which is the rifle i graduated to when i was 15 and have been shooting for the last 13 years. it has been my all purpose big game gun here in BC. i used it for black bear, elk, and blacktails here on the island. mulies and moose on the mainland. i also do some shooting but i do not reload.
i have been waiting to buy a new left handed rifle and was going to go with another 06, because it is all i know, but during my wait i have had time to look around this site, the net, and seek others opinions, and the more interested i have become in the 300 win mag.
am i nuts for considering the switch ? is this the next logical step up from the 06 in terms of performance? i guess i want to know if this is more efficient but wont take off my shoulder. is the 300 win mag that cartridge? or should i look at the 300 RUM, 7mm mag, 280 or something else? not interested in short mags because of availability and cost of ammo.
thanks for your time.

Nope, not nuts, just refining your kit...

But, you might regret selling a rifle you had since you were 15, I know I regret getting rid of a few...

Also, if your not recoil sensitive, the 300 win mag is a great round! Good luck!

Cheers
Jay
P.S. My other recommendation is to stick with a common round, just try finding uncommon shells in a small town IF you ever need to...

Are you nuts...no I don't think so. I shoot a 30-06 as my all purpose rifle. I had a 300 but it wasn't my cup of tea. Switching to a 300 mag you will have a recoil increase but also increased bullet energy and for larger game it may work to your advantage (for bear and elk as you mentioned) depending on the distance you shoot. You may find the 300 win mag "overkill" for deer though many hunt with it. Personally I'd stick with the good old 06, unless elk and bear are your regular game animals. Ammo costs a little more, so does reloading it compared to the 30-06. Just my 2c

I think the weight of the rifle and the selection of cartridge will outway the recoil differences between 3006 and 300WM. I'm shooting it in a light barreled Savage and the recoil isn't vicious. Mostly muzzle jump. I'm a left as well, but insist on shooting right handed.

Yah your nutz allright, a gunnutz. All the 300 will do is add about 100 yds of energy to your 06 numbers. I've shot elk with both the 06 and the 300 and couldn't tell any difference. I think if you match the bullet to the gun, and keep ranges sane, it is a non issue. From the numbers it looks like you are 28 and have done a fair amount of shooting, so I don't think the 300 is going to stomp you to death. I would say recoil will be more of a issue regarding stock fit, eye relief and gun weight. If I already had the 06, which I do and wanted more gun, I would probably go to a .338 win since you want ammo availability, I don't think recoil will be much different from the .300 in equivalent guns. If you reloaded it opens a few more doors, I personally like the .35whelen, inside 250yds it treads very close on the heels of the .338 with less powder and recoil.

Just my .02c, Homesteader

You clearly need 3 rifles. You need to get the old ought 6 back, you need a .338WM for the longer range stuff, and you need a .243 or something similar for popping the little blacktails. A man is crazy to think that he can hunt many different species of game animals with one calibre. The old timers did it, but they were all crazy. We all need a full stable of calibres.

I think you should have kept your .30/06 and added the .300win mag to your collection! :D I recently traded a rifle that I had shot alot and I miss her greatly :( If you had both you could evaluate weather or not the new one would replace the old one. Of course I'm shopping for a second safe, so I have a different problem than you.:) I think you'd like the .300 win mag, I use a .300wsm and love it.

No, you're not nuts...

But if you could kill 'em with -06, why do you need to kill 'em more with a MAGNUM?

We all fall prey to marketing; you are not alone.

Welcome to the wonderful life of being a gun nut. No you don't need a 300 mag, but why not? Buy one, shoot it, enjoy it, then get something different and do the same. You won't be short with any of the cartridges you mentioned, and there are many more that will do what you did with the '06. Experiment with different makes as well, its a hunting rifle, and any of the big brands on the market will be quality enough for that purpose.

You're not nuts at all. I started out with a 30-06 that killed everything I ever aimed at but then got the itch. After numerous short term romances with a variety of rifles I have settled on a Sako Av 300 winny when going for moose or a mixed bag. It weighs about 8.5 lbs scoped, recoil is tolerable, very accurate and I love the way Barnes TSX bullets hit game at high velocity. When I am hunting just whitetail I use a Kimber 84m in 308. I shoot 150 gr ballistic tips which are just the ticket for whitetails. It weighs well under 7lbs with a full belly and a Nikon Monarch 6x42 scope.

Then all you need is a 223 or something similar for plinking and you are all set.

If the bug really gets you common sense has no real place in this argument as I also have a 35 whelen and a 25-284 semi custom.

Of course I think you're nutz, everyone on this board is to some degree. If you want a 300 mag, then get one. The 300 will have the advantage in the longer shots if you choose to make them and it will launch the heavy bullets faster and will have more retained energy at all ranges. I also happen to be an 06 fan as well and hunted many years with one and never had any performance problems.I would hang onto the 06 and add a 300 to your gun locker, both are very capable.

i'm left handed as well, and i 've got a bunch of 308's- they way i look at it is that there isn't much diff between a 308 and an 06 until you get over 180 grains, the 300 is just a 06 on speed, and if you're hunting something that needs 220 grains or better, well, you might as well go whole hog and get a 338win mag- besides, the powder consumption on the 300 doesn't justify the performance increase

How about a .300H&H? Bridges the gap between .300win mag and .30-06 with good accuracy. Good for light loads and heavy, though ammo is'nt as common. That's the big downfall I guess. Maybe if we all buy .300H&H ammo, it will be stocked at the corner store!:D:D

yeah your nuts!I started with an .06' that I shot and still have for 24 years also have a 7mm-08 that I picked up last year.I've got the best of both worlds for what I want to hunt,:)

I bought a leftie Ruger ss 30-06 a few years ago and love it. The lam stock sucks up some of the recoil and then I found a lovely 308 Savage 99c lever with a detacheable mag. Deer, bear, moose covered pretty much. The Savage is a nice lefty gun and lots around. Not lookin for anything bigger for now but then Im an old fart and even the 06 kicks me a mite. But then that could be my buddies handloads too-he likes them hot. Probably max loads and 180gr. Love them Nikon scopes too. Have a Leupy on my 06 and a Nikon Monarch on the 308. Not much differenct except in price IMHO.

.300wm

My opinion is it all comes down to fit and feel. I have too many rifles and the only thing I want to change about that over the next few years is to add a few more--just because it's so much fun and you do learn a little something by trying new things.

I like my .338WM for the moose hunt but take my .300WM as a backup because I like it and have confidence in it.

Your mileage may vary...
