So how are the gophers doing where you guys are?

Agriculturally , that is self defeating, badgers and coyotes predate on gophers.
Badgers predate on very expensive farm machinery as well and coyotes predate on everything including antelope ,mulies, whitetail, elk and moose! When your on your land,do as you see fit. When Im a guest on their land, I do what Im asked and if it includes killing coyotes and badgers then they best stay outah my sight. They are the farmers , not me, Im just the imported killer!!! We do have property that we are asked not to kill badgers and they get a pass if we see them! We dont shoot any foxes either.

We’re asked to shoot every badger we see on many ranches. A buddy had a quarter horse step in a hole while he was moving cows. Broke his back and they shot the horse.

Curious what damage badgers do to the machinery
Are they climbers ?
Cant say as i have heard of any damages attributed to them other than their holes

It was reference of the massive holes they dig. Replacing damaged parts on a combine head becomes very expensive as well as the dangers or riding anything and hitting a hole. Horses and cattle are another concern!

Gotcha
Understand the livestock can occasionally get hurt/killed but luckily we never had it happen

Any hole or dirt pile big enough for modern self propelled machinery to worry about should be fairly easily visible and avoidable
Around here most holes would be the diameter of a ice cream pail some up to a 5 gallon pail

I can see older equipment with the small wheels taking a beating though

Where I shoot gophers every land owner has told me to shoot any badger or any coyote I see and I willingly comply with that request, if I was to run into a land owner that said don't shoot anything but the gophers then that's what I would do, it's their land and they make the rules, I keep a ledger in my truck with all the land owners instructions that way there is never any misunderstandings

Ill take picks of the size of some of these holes next time Im out there. They should be easy to see but not always and just like car accidents that shouldnt happen but they do. Im only going with what Ive been told from more than one farmer in Saskatchewan. I have seen holes that could easily swallow a five gallon pail with five gallon pails all around it!!

Wonder if it may be something else ?

Had a hole like that in a field but by the time it was that large it had become a coyote den
Started the first few years as a gopher colony , then the badger hole , then the coyotes
Was roughly the diameter of an oil barrel

I bet this badger has a coal-coloured coat? Wasn't sure what the heck I was looking at when I crested the hill. I was so relieved=shot a few gophers with the 17M2 to celebrate! :)

Gotta remember=when in SK, you have to put something man-made in the photos for scale. lol God I love that place. Seems I'm either there or wanting to be.
