10/22 Chassis Or Stock With Enclosed Forend?

Yep that's the Jager chassis with a 12" acculite barrel with a volquartson comp. I put the volquartson trigger parts in the Ruger trigger housing and it's a 2lb trigger with a short reset. Shoots great, looks good too.
Oh and the tandemkross mag release/bolt release is a must. The mag release works pushing out and pulling in with a big ass paddle. Makes mag changes a breeze.
I use the Ruger 10rnd mag with a mag base extension that I made, and a mag pouch system of my design that secure and robust. The bx25 mags work in the pouches too, but the tuff mags have stainless lips so they won't hold in the pouch well with the magnet system I use in the pouch.

*Note: BX25 magazines must be pinned to limit to 10rnds, but some seem to have very short rivets that somehow allow 25... Crazy, huh?

Crazy indeed......

It seems a lot of chassis are not compatible with aftermarket receivers owing to the longer picatinney rail interfering with the enclosed hand guard.

I REALLY like the Tacsol with left side charging handle but it has the extended pic rail which basically rules out using it with any chassis with an enclosed hand guard.

I was actually thinking about it the other way around - the rail could be machined back to stock receiver dimensions and then it would work with the enclosed hand guard with no modification.

I haven't actually added optics to gauge if the extra rail at the front is required but if it is that could rule out milling the pic rail shorter (now if there is a pic rail on the hand guard that wouldn't matter)

Does the pic rail on the hand guard line up with the pic rail on the receiver?

Hard to tell from this picture but it looks like they do. If so that is a plus over the Midwest Industries.

How hard is it to strip this thing for a deep clean (ie get the bolt out and clean with a rod from action to muzzle)?

It's basically the 4 screws for the handguard, and the chassis bolt like all 10/22's... Not an AR disassemble but not a gsg16.
The rail is damn close to lining up...

Only other chassis I would go with is the crazy Ivan, so you can use an AR handguard. They do ship to Canada. But they are always sold out, so I went this route
 
Not a chassis/modern system, but the EABCO M1 carbine stock has an enclosed handguard, or the Ruger has an OEM M1 carbine talos edition.

The upper handguard is retained by 1 screw on he EABCO stock, and the the front barrel band. The Ruger OEM carbine stock has 2 screws, and the front barrel band.

Revisiting this as I built the barrelled action today.

My rifle build will look a lot like this. The Jager chassis is on order, I have the same butt stock, mag release and if that is a MDT pistol grip then that is the same too.

Is the optic a Holosun 510? If so then that is also the same. I did a Volquartsen carbon 13" barrel and a Tandemkross Steam Demon compensator (mostly because it looks like it is quite open and will be easy to clean).

Will need to trim the chassis to work with the SBI receiver. I might get someone to machine it so it's not ugly.

Do you pull or push the Fire Switch mag release? I had planned to pull but with the Kidd trigger pull doesn't really work, thankfully push does so my options are limited.

Yup its an MDt grip, and a Holosun 510C. I pull my fire switch, just made sense to get the right feel I was looking for. I just used the standard trigger pack and changed the guts with a Volquartsen trigger upgrade kit.

An alternative to trimming the receiver rail/Handguard is simply to get a flat top receiver (OEM or aftermarket - Dlask, SBI etc all produce one) and add your own rail. Then you can get a 0moa, 10moa, 20moa rail etc to closely match the height of Picatinny rail on handguard.

If using a red dot, the last two Picatinny spaces at front of receiver on the Picatinny models are not necessary anyway.

Will be interested in accuracy once this is all set up.

My bet is it won’t be as accurate, but will cost approximately 4 times the price of a regular plane Jane OEM 10/22 carbine.

As stated in the original post, this build is more for IPSC mini rifle. The dynamic nature of running and gunning and the size and distance of the targets doesn't require perfect accuracy. If you can put two in a tea cup saucer at 50yrds you are good to go. Part of the fun of owning a ruger 10/22 is the customization. The platform has endless possibilities of what it can be customized into...ipsc mini rifle, PRS, Silhouette, tactical plinker, OEM squirrel gun. You name it there is kit out there to do it.

As mentioned above this gun will be used for IPSC duty, the receiver chosen was the best fit as I wanted a charging handle that is accessible with the left hand (SBI has a rear AR15 style charging handle) and will work with the CST LRBHO bolt.

I could have the front of the receiver machined off (ie the last couple of Pic spaces that are an issue with the hand guard fitment) but will determine that when I have the chassis. In this instance the last two slots *may* be used for a second offset red dot.

Accuracy will be fine for the intended purpose I am sure. This rig will be light, compact and can be shot fast.

Reliability is to be determined but if using quality hardware then it usually works out. Sometimes some finessing is required to make all the parts and ammo get along but that is to be determined once it is built.

One thing I have learned about Mini Rifle (and PCC before it) is that a reliable gun beats even the fastest unreliable gun. Generally if you have a reliable gun you are pretty much guaranteed to place in the top third no matter how well you actually shoot.
 
Very interested to hear what folks think of the Jager. Particularly if you have the 10" barrel and forend filling brake installed.
I have been looking at one for a while now.
I have an SBI G2 which I like a lot but it's blocky as eff in the forend.
Have also been looking at the MWI but I don't love the idea of cutting down my pic rails on any of my receivers or cutting inlet into the forend.

Maybe the jager needs this too?
Anyway, if you have a JAger, would be cool to hear about build quality etc.

I just built up the barrelled action over the weekend (just waiting on the Jager chassis now) and it pretty much does what I hoped (rear charger can be ran with minimal effort with left hand only and the CST LRBHO works).

The Jager and SBI will have fitment issues so will need to decide what to do there once I have it in hand. Like you I am not thrilled about this but it is a game of compromises with these guns it seems (especially if you want an enclosed forend).

My plan had to change as my original idea was to use a ultra lightweight Taccom chassis with enclosed hand guard that will work with the SBI receiver without modification but it turns out they no longer make the enclosed hand guard version (only the half round open version) so that idea went out the window.

Ya, interesting to hear once you build it out.

I have also been looking at a seller on GP who 3D prints what seems like a pretty decent chassis for a fraction of the price of MWI or JAger or SBI.

Truth! My 10/22 has an acculite 12" barrel (aluminumwith a chromoly rifled sleeve), the Jager chassis, a Carolina crusher comp, and a volquartsen trigger upgrade kit...add in the tandemkross mag release and it shoots, as the kids say, "Fast AF!"
She likes mini mags, aguila extra, and fedral auto match
 
Why not look at the SBI gen 3 chassis with the enclosed foreend attachment? They have two lengths.

Chassis is really well done.

(Btw, this rifle is not fast AF)
