Frustrating last few visits

I usually really like the CSC and always usually suggest it to my colleagues. The last few times I’ve been there, the customer service has been frustrating.

On one visit, I went in planning to buy a pair of high end binoculars. After narrowing it down to a few options, I asked if I could take them outside to actually look at something farther than 10 yards away. The employee was very reluctant. I even offered to leave my keys and wallet behind as collateral, but he still wasn’t comfortable with it. Whatever. That’s fine. Store policy. Anyway, eventually, he agreed to let me take just one pair outside while watching me the entire time like a criminal on day-1 parole. It completely ruined the buying experience, and I ended up purchasing the binoculars online instead.

On my most recent visit, I bought a rifle, scope, and rings together. The salesperson confidently said I need high rings. I unfortunately trusted the recommendation, but when I got home and mounted everything, there was over a 3/8” gap between the scope and barrel. I went back and bought low rings instead, which fit perfectly—even with a 50mm objective. I didn’t want to put the old rings back together in the packaging etc because the store was nearly closing and I wanted to make it.

The following day, I tried to return the high rings since they were sold to me “incorrectly”. At first, I was told no returns. Only after explaining the situation did they agree to offer store credit, which is still frustrating given my situation.

What disappoints me most is that I’d expect this kind of nonsense from a big-box retailer, not a local gun shop. I really wish there were more knowledgeable staff making product recommendations.

One final anecdote:
When I was buying the rifle, scope, and rings, the salesperson said I need to buy a lounting solution and said they have rails. I told him I specifically wanted two-piece bases, but since they didn’t have any in stock, his recommendation was to buy the rail and cut it in half. What a smart and resourceful suggestion…..

I spent 40 minutes at the counter trying to wave down employees for help to buy 5 boxes of 6.5 Creedmoor and a case of 2000 rounds of 22LR.

The employees seemed happier to shoot the #### with old idiots complaining about the government, or sipping their starbucks and killing the last 10 minutes of their shift instead of providing customer service.

I also tried to order a mag conversion kit for my weatherby from them. I will give you 3 guesses how that went, the first 2 guesses don't count.

CSC is less than stellar, WM is so full of bull####. Bass Pro is expensive but at least they have customer service. That leaves me ProLine shooters in Inglewood. Their selection is small, but at least they know how to run a business.

You're surprised someone wouldn't let you walk out the door with a pair of high end binoculars unsupervised given the high amount of retail theft? I bet the employee would be on the hook if you walked away with them. It would take a long time at minimum wage to pay for them.

In terms of the rings. I do my own research to see what height I need. I don't rely on the advice of a minimum wage store employee. I'm not putting them down but I laugh when I see customers asking someone behind the gun counter for in depth advice. I have met very few gun store employees that I would consider having a wealth of knowledge.

Well I wasn’t expecting the guy to say yes to letting me take the binos out of the store but I figure I’d ask and offered collateral. Like I said, if it’s store policy so be it. No big deal. The annoying part was when I did go out with the guy and I could feel him breathing on me. Even with my wallet and keys behind his counter inside.

Never asked for advice re rings but he spoke so confidently that I second guessed myself.

I made a purchase a few weeks ago online where they wrote my shipping address wrong. Not sure how this happened as I entered it correctly in the order. You think it would be a simple copy and paste? Luckily canada post called me to confirm my shipping address and the parcel was only delayed by a day. This was my first order with csc and I too was not impressed.

Most retail experiences are ruined by the bottom of totenpole inexperienced staff at the counter making minimum wage and not giving a crap about their products, what they sell, or how much they sell - especially the new-age younger crowd... this industry or otherwise.
It's on the senior staff/supervisor/owner to step in and take over. Especially when dealing with high ticket items or technical issues/questions. Come up with a solution, make the transaction smooth, answer questions.
Don't want me out in the lot with binoculars? Cool, come with me then and stand by. Takes seconds.. no one's willing to solve problems anymore.

Last few places I've been to, most junior staff was very disinterested, out to lunch, no manners, trying to rush you out as quickly as they can. Just because you've been manning the cash register at a gun store for few months, you're no expert.
In this day and age luckily lots of info for free on the net, first hand experiences, videos etc. I no longer trust the staff for advice.

As a retail worker I can tell you that:
A- you know who is going to steal from you and who isn’t
B- the worker could walk outside with you
C- he left his wallet and keys inside- he’s not going to make a run for it.

If I had been the retail worker you would have had a much better experience

Ive had some hits and misses with CSC. But ultimately they have an excellent selection and reasonable prices. Super handy operating hours too (open till 9pm). For those reasons alone they remain my favorite gun store in Calgary. I think most firearm enthusiasts will eventually learn that gun counter salesman are alot like car salesman, they often dont know much because they are young and new to the sport, usually tight on cash so they cant afford to try lots of products.

Only a couple years after graduating high school, i was between industrial jobs and decided to work at the BassPro gun counter for 2 seasons (wanted to try retail, and get the 40% discount on Basspro band stuff). Only had my PAL for like 3 years at that point. Only knew about what I owned personally (which wasnt much), what hunting I'd done, and what other customers had said (which was LOTs and actually pretty valuable knowledge to have). 80% of the staff was the same as me, the other 20% were old folk who were simply bored with retirement. They had tons of knowledge.. about old stuff that is nolonger sold. Their hunting knowledge was strictly classified lol

I know these threads always turn into a pile-on crap fest, so here's my experience with CSC... I've spent thousands and thousands with them online and have never had a single issue. They have a good selection and sometimes hard to find stuff. I found them using almostprohibited in the first place, so their prices were what got me looking.

I've never been to their store, so can't speak to the quality of their counter staff, but their online and shipping people are great.

+1 for online, wish I had something within driving distance.

I went in to test out the price match policy a few weeks ago. This particular gun was a couple hundred cheaper elsewhere, the store policy states they will price match. When asked about price matching he said they could knock off $20 but couldn't price match. I asked if there was a manager around he could escalate it to and I was told the manager wouldn't do anything. Handled the gun in store and then went back home and ordered online for a couple hundred less. I'd like to support local but will only go so far...

I recall that without moving from in front of the counter, sighting optics on a tower north of Williams and a car's side mirror in the parking lot outside Rangeview another time. Never been inside CSC but don't they have a glass front window?

Maybe he wanted to be close incase you dropped it.

I dunno my local gas station, that I live down the street from, lady sees me all the time. I forgot my wallet and I left my cell phone with them, even with that, she said I got 5 mins or calling the police.

CSC has been on a decline for a few years in my experience. I used to have a hard time walking around without being asked if I needed help by every single employee. Last time I was there I swear a guy literally dodged me on purpose. He was doing #### all... Being mostly ignored seems to be the new norm but that was pretty lame.

Yeah. Fair, but I’d rather look thru optics without having to look thru the windows of the store

The last few times I have been into CSC, have been hit and miss. I can’t say I was ignored but a few times I did have to wave someone down. For the most part, I would say it’s been positive though. Another good LGS is Flys Etc in High River. And if you go during most days, the CT at Southland and Macleod, has a couple, surprisingly knowledgeable guys.

basspro crossing has actually been incredibly good to me the last few visits, same with proline. I find that the csc staff is definitely not as helpful or knowledgeable as they should be. They certainly haven’t been as correct as the last couple fellas I dealt with at crossiron that’s for sure. I bought a t3x online from them then went in for rings and I hummed and hawed over what height talley 1 peice to get and he said you’ll need mediums, I opted for lows and sure enough I was returning them next day for mediums.

If you’re looking for another store try Ben at llianjjang outdoors. It’s above the Chinese super market on center st. Language barrier but he’s got everything in there if you know what you’re looking for.

suggesting to cut a rail in half rather than 2 peice bases ? That guy should be sweeping the floor not behind the counter lol.

Liangjian is wicked!!
