I've never had anything like the OP's second story, which was a gripping story for me! I have no doubt that sense of sadness and fear were real, and I believe that it could be the presence of a very tangible evil. I know too many stories from too many people to dismiss such things; alternatively, there are places where one feels overwhelming peace and joy.
But I digress. I did have one unsettling hunting experience a little over 5 years though. I was hunting a new area for grouse, and parked my truck near some trails. It had snowed the day before, so there was about an inch of snow on the ground. I started down the trail, trying to pay close attention to my surroundings.
I quickly realized something odd: there was absolutely no sounds. No wind rustling the remnants of dead leaves on the poplars. No birds chirping or hopping branch to branch. No squirrels chattering or running through the blanket of dead leaves under the light snow. No ravens or magpies. I walked about a mile and a half, getting more and more uneasy as time went on.
I did end up shooting three grouse with my Henry 22lr, and that was the only sound that pierced the air. The grouse just sat on the edge of the road, so I didn't even hear them. I turned around after the third bird. The last half mile before I got to the truck saw my anxiety started to ramp up, as the daylight disappeared quickly. And just as I got to the truck, I heard wolves howling down the trail!
Now, my question was how long those wolves had been present. I saw no tracks, so they hadn't walked the trail ahead of me. I didn't hear them walking alongside me down the path. Yet I know that the bush is usually only silent like that when an apex predator is around, and it certainly wasn't me! I've hunted there numerous times since, and it's always had classic bush sounds... But not that time. I grew up hunting in the bush, and I had never experienced that for so long. I still joke with friends that Sasquatch nearly got me that day, but I know it was wolves that were the most likely cause.
I also ran into a pack of wolves hunting deer in 2024, and two tried circling around me in the bush. That got the heart rate going!
