Opinion: Buying philosophy for optics

Not sure I'd run out and buy an FFP scope for target work,

FFP all the way!
Why?

What benefit does a FFP optic confer for range shooting?

The VAST majority of people who say stuff like, "FFP all the way" haven't got the first clue WHY FFP or SFP. The vast majority of people are just parroting what they have heard on the internets and have no actual experience.

The situation I mentioned was for a PRS match. No matter the zoom level, I can quickly measure corrections or use info from others. If a buddy said he was holding 1.4 mils right, I can hold with my FFP scope easily.

It wouldn’t be anywhere near as easy with a simple + reticle on a SFP scope. Sounds like torture. lol!

I never have and have no intention of ever shooting a PRS style rifle or match, all of my range shooting is pretty much done at known distances on DCRA targets so I have no need for a FFP scope . I have many friends who do shoot PRS however and agree, it makes sense to use one for PRS . If I am using a scope it will be a SFP unit, same as if I am using a scope on a hunting rifle.
I use a range finder to determine distances .

This only holds true for taking data from other shooters and then it is only sort of true because their bullet / velocity may be different. What you are describing is one very specific condition in a very specific shooting competition, where a FFP scope has a kinda advantage. For 99.9% of shooters, a FFP is not the best choice .... but man you'd never know that from these kinds of internet boards. EVERYONE touts the FFP and very few people have a clue as to why.

Measuring corrections makes no difference on a SFP reticle, as long as you don't change the magnification in the process.

FWIW I am not at all against FFP scopes. I have several of them and really like them. I have just been shooting long enough to understand that FFP has its pros and cons and that most shooters don't understand those.

You sound vaccinated.
Far from it.

Is that gold plated bottom metal Saddam?

The wrapped scope is tell
The foundation stock made from something so inappropriate as micarta is a tell

If your not a poor post the fleet of 6k optics

Absolutely not defending the guy, but Foundation stocks are very nice and great at what they are built for.
The rifle is clearly PRS-oriented, wrapped scopes are a common thing

SFP for PRS is like driving to work using only right hand turns. Nobody is saying you cannot do that.

Sometimes it’ll be just fine.

Other times you’ll arrive late.

FFP is the right tool for the job for PRS. Arguing otherwise is silly.

Nice collection Tokay444! I like quality glass as well and wrap all my optics. I find it funny that some (IDCAY) get their panties in such a bunch because someone likes high end glass!! Buy whatever fits the bill for your purpose and wallet. If you can only afford a Tasco then buy the Tasco but don’t be mad if someone thinks they’re junk! We all have our own opinions. Some are like Clint Eastwood said “Legend in your own mind !” I have a $7000 scope on a 22 rimfire and it’s FFP and it’s wrapped, PCP rifle with $5000 scope
wrapped and a custom 22 semi with a $5000 scope wrapped. I worked hard for my money so I take care of my things. I also shoot much more than most.IMG_3964.jpegIMG_3988.jpegIMG_2276.jpegIMG_1276.jpeg

I always get a kick outta these threads!

My scope is the best because I paid $2K for it! Have you ever tried a $5K scope? Nope, cause this $2K scope is the best! Ah, okay!

They make and have alpha glass for a reason, and it’s not just to strip you of $$$$. If I could I would have and only use alpha glass, but like most I can’t, so have to be smart with my funds. I applaud those that do, not because they flaunt it, but because they know the difference and appreciate it.
While you don’t need alpha glass to shoot far, or accurately, it does make a difference when it matters most. My dedicated hunting rifle wears alpha glass. My bench rifle wears alpha glass. I have many other rifles that I have that I don’t require alpha glass on, but would like it if they did, but funds don’t allow. I take a few hunting trips a year, for a week or two. Take time off, pay for things to make the trip happen and simply refuse to use cheap a## glass. I may get a once in a lifetime opportunity that I have to work hard for, and pay for, and there is no way I’m going to squander that using cheap optics. I see and hear about it all to often already.

Heck my 10/22 sported an STAC 4-20x50 scope for a few seasons for grouse duty. The amount of light gathering on that optic far surpassed others of that price point. The very last light in the evenings made for great grouse slaying with that optic. This was before large optics became a mainstay on small rifles like they are currently.

Do you need or require alpha glass to shoot out to 500m at the range off the bench? No! But if conditions are right, that alpha glass makes a difference in what you see! I have set up my youngest daughter to come and shoot distance with me, but she gets a $600 arken scope that is more than adequate and capable to have us hitting out past 1000m regularly. But my alpha glass outshines that scope when the conditions warrant it. Mirage, is but just one factor. I just screw on the mirage ring my glass came with, boom improvement that is noticeable. Say pouring rain, like posted above while out on the range, boom, my alpha glass again has the advantage. Now, my ability may not perform up to others, but I can’t blame my equipment for that, and means I need more range time to practice.
A $600-$800 arken will serve you well for years at those ranges to target shoot. Will alpha glass do it better? Sure will. Buy what you can afford, and still leave you funds to shoot rounds down range, cuz there is nothing to compare to blow 1k of rounds a month on range trigger time! That trigger time will always put BIG smiles on faces. Especially when you take newbs to shooting and have them hitting out to 1000m in 10-20 minutes of shooting time!

This says, “I don’t know what I’m talking about” more than if you’d said nothing at all.
“‘T’is better to keep one’s mouth closed, and only appear stupid, than to open it and remove all doubt.”

I won that stock at a match.
There’s more to the price of alpha glass than just the glass also. Arguably of greater importance than the glass itself, is accurate and repeatable turret tracking.
