.308 or 30-06

It's not a matter of whether it can be done, it's a matter of whether it should be done - in a hunting situation where the goal is not to take as few risks as possible of wounding game. At the range? That's indeed the place to enact one's sniper fantasies. That or the battlefield.
What a load of garbage. Your ethics are yours, no one else's. It is a very small person that attempts to project that onto other people, especially the way you have chosen to.

Here-yea-go, more reason to dislike me. Killed this two last autumn with the 30-06, 125 grain accubond. Humped by a$$ off for both of them. Killed many other big game with that good ole cartridge.
Dislike? No. Disagree? Sure.
All sorts of different paths lead to the same place.
Those are nice deer.Trusting that the effort was worth the reward.

In a previously post you mentioned "hate", that's more stern than dislike/disagree. I truly support the 30-06, one of the best all-around cartridges, besides the 7mm Remington Magnum. Today, there is debate over the newly created inferior cartridges.

In my opinion you're on top of this, this is good analysis. Really, the only way i could imagine expecting 400 yard shots is in the mountains or on the plains, and even then i would expect with skill one could - and should, ethically - close that gap.
This heart shot was the result of a lasered 372 yards on a white tail, just short of 400 , on a cut line .
The shot was across the valley with no way of stalking closer.
This was done with a rifle chambered in 303 British shooting a 150 grain TSX bullet with the scope set on 4X, resting against a power pole.
It's not as big a deal as some think, but I practice my shooting a lot at those distances and not from a bench rest.

Of course the further your shot the more can happen, and saying that you would take a shot at 400+ yards isn’t a big deal doesn’t mean you would take that shot if the shot was marginal. I think if the conditions are favourable, if you have a good rest ( more and more people use big tripods to take longer shots) and if you know you have done it before then why not, but the same person will pass on the shot if it ain’t right at the moment before pulling the trigger or at least I hope so, I would and I did reconsider longer shots because the wind wasn’t right, the game wasn’t in the right position or there was a way to get closer. I always try to get closer but sometimes it ain’t possible and either you take the shot or you eat tofu until the shot is perfect!!

I say it's not that big a deal, but that is for me. I have spent my whole life shooting at distances out to 1,000 yards and am a pretty good long range shooter compared to those who do not take the wind into consideration.

Each shot needs to be assessed of course, as far as the condition and fall of shot are concerned .I have passed up as many closer shots as I have longer shots for the same reasons, the biggest one for the close shots being obstructions and what's beyond - I don't believe in brush busting through bush if I not have a clear shot, nor do I take a shot if the area behind the target is suspect as far as safety goes.
However that is a topic for another day! LOL

Same here, other then the 1000 yards shooting and that’s just because our range only goes to 500m( officially) 🙄😂🤣
I passed on shot that later I thought I should have taken. I passed on a moose at 50 yards, I could only see its antlers, I was lower then him and he was kind of behind some sort of berm that was the closest I’ve got to a moose. And my last moose was around 280 yards on the move and I nailed it right in the lungs 🫁 totally instinctive never even thought about it, didn’t have the time everything happened in a few seconds.
Anyway hunting is never a sure things anything can happen between the time you squeeze that trigger and the time the bullet hits the animal so do the best you can with what you know and what you have, pushing your limits is not a bad thing!

A 2.5/3.5-10 x 40/42 on a 30-06 generates a lot of hate. 😂

Nothing wrong with that scope, looks great, ring mounts too. However the bolt handle is one the wrong side …fight me lol.

No pictures...
Your ego is really that fragile? Your self-worth is that low?
Why are you telling lies? You know you're not supposed to?
Stop thinking you're really something, because you aren't. Not even close.
If you have anything else to say, send me a PM and save the rest of these folks from your silly drivel.

Looking for some suggestions to the age old argument... 30-06 or .308.
I've heard from friends that 30-06 is more versatile due to the availability in grain. Which makes it more ideal for what size game you want to hunt.
I also know that I've never heard of a .308 owner who regretted his/her purchase.
I live in a place with lots of deer and the occasional moose, so versatility is definitely important on that front.
I also want to consider things like cost and availability of ammo. Aswell as longevity of suggested brands.
Looking for all the help I can get! I'm a new gun owner on civilian side so I'm looking for as many suggestions as possible

thanks guys
I love my 308 m1 Garand! I’d just get the cheaper one which would be the 308

Any thing a 308 can do, a 30-06 can do a little faster, a little harder, and a little farther.

If almost as good is good enough for you, get the 308.

The question is where and when it actually matters lol

"Almost as good" isn't really almost if the end result is the same. Course again, for the shooter actually making shots beyond 400 yards, then there's a point in its favour. Don't really think there are others though.

Besides satisfying the odd arbitrary law

“I am a sick man. I am a spiteful man. I am not a pleasant man at all. I believe there is something wrong with my liver..."

Gun writers have been making their living since 1952 on this very subject. I've had several of each both are grate, the horse is dead stop beating.

The biggest argument I hear for the 308 is often the short action, because they perform so similarly. After both chambering are sold in the same action which makes this a non-starter.

The argument often made for the 30-06 is often that it’s the entry-level cartridge for big bears. In my opinion since the difference between 308 and 30-06 is so small, if you need something more powerful than 308 you’d do better to move up to a medium bore.

I don’t think either of the 2 would be a mistake and having hunted with both I doubt switching would ever have made any difference in outcomes for me. I shot things and then ate them, others have done the same with bigger and smaller cartridges.

Your question is a pragmatic one but I actually don’t think the difference is enough to decide based on cartridge. As someone stated above the difference is greater if you handload.
If .5” of rifle makes a difference get the 308, and if you think you may want to handload later get the 30-06. 308 uses less powder, so even hand loading may not be the tie breaker.

I think you’re deciding between 2 successes and won’t seriously regret either.

Sounds like the 308 is for you then.

No need here for "something more powerful than a 308" I've got several 30-06's.
