Ruger, piece of sh!t or just me???? Letter sent to Ruger, saga continues.

Please bear with me.

This covers a 5 year span.

Came back from tour. Dropped a fair bit of cash on a 10/22, Volquatson trigger group, carbon fiber barrel, blah blah blah. Wouldn't feed worth crap. Switched to a "frozen then assembled" high end barrel. Wouldn't feed worth crap.

Traded whole thing in and got another high end set up. Junk.

Bought a target 10/22. Hammer forged barrel. Synthetic stock, blah blah blah. Tried it out and found it a really poor shooting rifle. Ran a cleaning rod thru the barrel and found out that the factory didn't cut the barrel blank correctly and the center of my barrel had a great big groove from where the barrel was supposed to be cut. New barrel, wouldn't feed worth a crap. New barrel, shoots not too bad but not what I expected from all the hype. Also got a t-shirt, some mags and stickers from the Ruger company after writing them a letter explaining all this. Whoop de fuc$ing wow!!!:rolleyes:, flip the smile upside down.

Drilled out the back of the receiver tonite per the "Ultimate 10/22" and found that now I can push a cleaning rod OUT of the barrel instead of pulling like I always have there is a dead spot in my barrel about 2" up the pipe. Now that I can SEE up the barrel. Guess what. BIG FUC%ING GROOVE WHERE THE BARREL SHOULD BE CUT" Fuc% me. I can't be this unlucky with a firearm.

Will return the rifle tomorrow and am unsure whether I will hold it over my head and fling it into the wall or "can't believe I'm saying this" try again.

My grandpa's 90 something year old Sureshot .22 shoots better than my Ruger.

Between tours and a busted back last year I finally have time to start my murderous spree on the little brown bastards of Alberta.

I'm looking for someone to give me some input on what a good bolt action .22 will do for me. I run custom bolt guns that shoot exceptionally well and am not looking for a piece of garbage. I don't mind spending the cake on a higher end gun but I would finally like to get something that will shoot out past 100m and be up to my shooting skills. This semi auto crap is about to stop.

Any help would be appreciated and I look forward to some decent advice. I just don't have time in my life to run a piece of sh!t.

I just took possession of a good used CZ452 american and its a great shooting bolt action rifle. They are not too pricey and shoot fantastic. The CZ453 would probably be even better because it comes with a better trigger and that's about all you need to improve on these rifles. If you are not familiar with them, do some asking around. Great guns.
 
the weatherby bolt 22 has an anshutz barrel and have herd they shoot great I think the newer 10-22s are worse I've owned 3 or 4 and wish I had never sold my original standard 10-22 no mods used shoddy butler creek clips and old ram line ones nevr sKipped a beat traded it off little while later bought anouther old used one put a heavy butler creek barrel on it and it was just as good then traded it on the crap one a brand new stainless 10-22 target doesn't work with cheaper ammo at all put in after market extractor radiused the bolt polised it It now works better but still not as good as my old cheap rigs. per haps the quality is going down ?
 
Guess it depends what kind of shooting you're doing. But, yeah, take a look at the CZ 453 American or Varmint. I've been nothing but happy with my 453 Varmint. If you don't mind spending more, pick up an Anschutz. Or get a custom rifle made. Like I said, depends what you're doing.
 
The 453 Varmint's worth an even harder look. Much better trigger, and better stock mounting, for a bit more money. The 452 Varmint has a lug in the barrel that is used for one of the two mounting screws, the other in the action itself. The 453 has two screws in the action, but none in the barrel, which is a better arrangement. (Though both will shoot pretty darn well, I'd still rather have the 453.)

If you want a decent bolt gun, buy a CZ. If you've had problems with your 10/22, that's your problem. Don't expect any sympathy.;)
 
I know people who have stripped their 10/22 down to the bare receiver and changed every single part .... Nice rifles (at least in the looks department), but like any other .22 they are finicky about ammo .... Did you try multiple brands or are you sticking to a single kind ? Mind you my Norinco cheapo JW-14 still outshoots a lot of those souped up Rugers when I stumble upon a brick of ammo she likes, mine seems to like Remington Thunderbolt (hyper vels) the most, closely followed by the "subsonic" stuff.

???Sympathy??? I just wanted some info.

I'm phoning today ref. the CZ. Ruger is about to take the long walk down a muddy road. Their presence in my gunroom is history.

And RobSmith. Yep, I tried 11 types of ammo and Federal shot the best. But Yellowjackets were second, and since they make that cool sound when they impact a gopher, I loaded up on them.
 
While your at it, consider ordering a 10 round magazine for the CZ, if that's something that would appeal to you. I have found my gun shoots quite well with most ammunition, and for making a dime sized pattern at 50 yards, 7/8 brands I've tried will work well (Federal bulk contained some erratic rounds). Even the high velocity CCI mini mags, Winchesters and Federals pattern nicely. I'm not really interested in chasing anything tighter than that. I just want to have some fun popping gophers with ammo that only costs a couple of bucks a box.

I had close to your original, VQ hammer, bolt buffer, titanium extractor. I also polished the bolt and keep the receiver pretty clean. I was getting lots of stove pipes before, I've only had a few made the changes. I feed it CCI green label, minimags and std velocity as well as bulk american eagle with no problems and they shoot well enough out to 100 yards. (I installed the VQ carbon fiber barrel and a new stock later on). My guess is the extractor made a big difference but I've also noticed after about 500 rounds the bolt seems like it's getting gummed up and is more likely to stovepipe. The one ammo it definitely hated were Xperts. I got some jams because the bullet was slightly crooked.

Anyways, I'm sure you tried a bunch of ammo before sending that back, just didn't want anyone to think they're all lemons.

Sorry to here you toubles, my experience has been the opposite, the 3 I have contact with mine a buddy and brother inlaw, all all gopher killing machines. Not unlike any other 22 some ammo works better than others.
my barrel will never see anything but a dry bore snake but the action does need to be cleaned every 500 rounds or so.

I never really understood the overboard accessorizing of a 10/22 when and bolt of half the price would out shoot it.

That said for my main useage (gophers and plinking) a good semi is far more useful than a great bolt. this lesson I learned the hard way, by the time you get the one carefuly placed shot off, your buddy with the semi has already kill the gopher with two reasonably aimed shots. The only way to counter that is to shoot an 17hmr and work from 125+.

I raise the bid to 102.99 and 3/4's down the muddy lane.
 
Well brothers, I have a stainless 10/22 that has been an absolute tack driver since the day I brought it to the range. It was the first Ruger that I purchased and I have since acquired a Single Six, two Vaqueros and a Security Six. For the money I think that Ruger is one of the best buys. Having said that I have never done barrel changing or any of the other things that have been referred to in this thread. I wish you the best of luck but please don't call Ruger's names, they are good guns. :wave:
