Need to dig up a 223 big game thread and compare everyone’s responses. For those that just can’t help but have an opinion.

I would consider getting a 308... if I didn't already have a 30-06 and a 6.5x55.

My 2 cents and dont know if it has been mentioned.
Awhile back during the last ammo shortage you could find 308 but no 30-06.
However if that was not a consideration I do lean towards the 30-06.

30-06 if you reload and 308 if you don’t . You really don’t see much difference between the 2 when purchasing ammo but when you reload 30-06 starts to show is self

Honestly find a rifle you like that fits you well, then find it in either 30-06 or 308. After that scope it with the best scope you can buy.

30-06 is better ANY TIME you don't want slower, weaker, and shorter.

This is true but what I don't understand is....
a 200-220gr bullet, slightly off target 'cause sh!t happens, hits a shoulder/upper leg bone from a quartering shot and the bone breaks/shatters and animal is down. Maybe not dead but down.
The same fvcked up shot with 130-165gr bullet hits a shoulder/upper leg, glances off and the animal is wounded and keeps on running.
That's my reasoning to prefer the heavy bullet in the '06.
Myself, for deer, I've used 308 Sako hammerhead and it worked well and got the job done. I've also used 9.3x62. This year, in different areas, I'm using a 375 Ruger and a 12ga sabot.

We always assumed it would be one of those ones you could always get.

30-06 is better ANY TIME you don't want slower, weaker, and shorter.

And now we're right back to "when is the result actually different?" Otherwise we're kind of in your whole "that might be your truth but not THE truth" or whatever it was you said.

It was available here. If you want $128 per box Solignac mono bullets anyway. Might be the only time some of that sold lol.

I dunno. Not sure I'd even trust 375 Ruger, those bones are stout haha. May wanna start thinking 458 Lott.

Put me in camp "dont matter". Good bullets are reaching vitals and doing such similar damage there wouldn't be any difference
