When is faster better? Every time any animal is shot with a 30-06 vs a 308? In some specific examples?

I never said slower is better, did I?

What about slower at the start and faster at the end?

My long list of customers looking for 30-06 ammo during that time was very real.
Perhaps you just did not go shopping for it during that year or so ?
I know who ever would of thought ?
We always assumed it would be one of those ones you could always get.
Just goes to show even with the old 06 you should stock up a bit.

I looked all the time after the first time they were out of 223.. 30-06 price barely even changed even when it was the only thing left on the shelf.

I dunno. Not sure I'd even trust 375 Ruger, those bones are stout haha. May wanna start thinking 458 Lott.

All I looked at was WW white box because that was all I EVER bought before or after. No I didn't buy any because I had crap loads from the CMP and STILL haven't shot them all. I do reload them though. Shot quite a few deer with 30-06 reloads using up my stock pile of old flat 30-30 bullets. 130 grain flat soft tip at 3000 fps is pretty impressive what it will do to a deer.

They function great in the Garand as well as my bolt action Savage 110. Easily go from one end to the other of a deer.

different guns and ammo, different results for sure, but I saw this the other day and it really proves your point. A 22" barrel on that rifle, but still. 2617 FPS with a 165 gr....

Did that with an old hunting buddy one year. It was what convinced him handloaded ammo was the way to go. - dan

My 30-06 150gr TTSX Barnes factory ammo clocked at 3030fps out of a 22" for sub moa groups. My 308 win with a 24" barrel and fed blue box 150gr does 2850 fps for comparison. 180gr Herter's out of my 06 does 2750 fps, 308 win 180's was mid 2550's. So it all depends what type of ammo you buy.

I do the same thing RJ. The old 06 is no slouch with modern powders and a chronograph; I'm still working (fine tuning) the load for the 168gr. But the load for the TTSX is awesome. I was at almost 3400 fps but accuracy went south so I reduced things a bit

No functional difference between the OG and the newer (if the 308 can be called newer) cartridge in an overwhelming majority of hunting scenarios... unless you handload, and then the OGs end up having an edge in FPS and energy on target.

Agreed, our new powders and modern metallurgy sure can get the most out of the classics. I'm running my 8x57 with cfe 223 and 160gr @3000 fps for about 3200 ftlbs at the muzzle. 180's with re17 at 2950fps, 200's with re 17 at 2790 fps, and 220gr with re 17 at 2670 ish....the re 17 loads all between 3450-3500 ft-lbs. Pressures based off quickload indicate 62,000 psi and my reloads extract and function easily even in the warm summer heat.
